The car has been towing 3 ton trailers continually since new!Engine is perfect so I hope to get another 80k out of the new box now.
Which suggests it (gearbox) wasnt up to the job then ?

That's why manual boxes are best for regular long distance heavy towing work. Bloke I know gets 150,000 miles out of his Defenders and it is ALL towing - often as far as Spain or even Greece.

Still if you can have a free box when it goes wrong it doesn't really matter!!!

The ZF autos have a reputation of running a bit hot when towing and have a finite life as a result. You can get a fully reconditioned one for less than a grand from Ashcroft Transmissions so its not a life threatening expense when one does go bang.

Just looking into this for the Touareg which is about to run out, Tesco have just stopped selling new policies now so I had a google and Which recommend these guys.

http://www.warrantywise.co.uk/

Seems fairly simple and no exclusion list.

50 per month seems pretty good for piece of mind and is based upon the labour rates at my main VW dealer so they could carry out any work...

I had to have a new gearbox at 20,000 miles and would hate to think what that would have cost had I not been under warranty so I think its worth it!!
