I love the sentiment Sparticus....but
1) I have no mechanical ability - whenever I try I always end up stripping threads / burring / shearing stuff making it worse
2) It's not the simple act of bolting the thing on, it's dismantling the bits around it to get to it in a way where they all go back in the same place in the same order without breaking anything.
3) I need the car for work so can't afford to have it off the road for any length of time.
4) it assumes I can easily find a similar X-Trail in a local breakers yard.
Doing all these things might be more expensive in time & money.

It does make me wonder however if my local garage could source a recon / 2nd hand part.......I'll have a chat in the morning and a nose round the scrap yard - maybe I can procure the part fro the friendly spanner jockeys Thanks for the thought

There are loads of sites on google if you punch in the part you need some breakers yards might have the bit you need. Worth a punt but they all know the value of bit but you could save a few quid.
Bloke at work was quoted 3000 for a back axle on his Xtrail but sourced one for 600 and got it fitted for 300 !
You never know.
