They certainly do but not as cool as the original farmers' alpine Sisley. Allroad would be my A6 of choice since the A6 Avant is pretty well the perfect car.

Another vote for the A6 Quattro. Mine's an Avant, on the slip never gets anywhere near anything as disgusting as wheel spin

2500 I think, should be fine for a VM.

Better off with an XC70 IMHO.

2100kg for the current A6 Quattro Avant, 2500kg for the current A6 Allroad.

what are peoples thoughts on the skoda yetti? they seem popular but never seen one on a slip. also people who complain that their 4wd cars are crap when braking in the snow have to remember that once youve pressed the clutch, you have no wheel drive! the trick is to keep your left foot planted on the floor whilst braking until the engine is about to stall - that way the engine stops the wheels locking. ive known a couple of people who have crashed landrovers then gone around telling people that they are crap in the snow! the last auto i drove in the snow was a hearse, so i didnt get to play too much with that!

I've driven 4wds just about all my driving life, Slll swb LR, Discoverys & a HiLux. People buy a 4WD & think they are suddenly bomb proof. 4WDs are only good for keeping you moving, when it comes to stopping you're in the same boat as every bugger else, possibly worse due to the extra weight.

Mostly agree. However, I used to have an old Mk1 Allroad which was quite good in the snow. Now got a new 4WD A6 estate which is nowhere near as good in the snow. The difference - tyres. General Grabbers on the Allroad, Pirelli things on the A6. In general I find that the tyres usually fitted to a 4WD vehicle are better than their road type equivalents in the white stuff - going forwards or sideways!

Driving on snow is a real skill !! Currently running Goodrich mud terrains on the Landy & avon rangers on the ML, both great in fresh snow but completely useless on the hard packed stuff....
AWD, 4WD or front wheel drive with decent tread & not too much width are all ok but forget rear wheel drive if you're out in the snow !!!
To be fair most 4WD's get about but it's usually the driver that's the weak link.

I used to spend at least four months a year in the Alps in ski resorts as a ski guide and once you get used to it driving in snow isn't difficult - and not all of the roads are as well looked after as you might think over there! Of course it's probably different snow or something!

Turns out to buy the bits to re-condition is nearly the same price as getting a new engine. Both VERY expensive

After a lot of looking around and even driving A4 Allroads, A6s of all types and even contemplating a Skoda Yeti decision made.

Newer engine being fitted next Monday. Came out of a 2012 with 12K miles. Hardly run in.
Should outlive the car!

After the expense there will be no change of jeep. I'll run her into the ground first (or it will run me!!)

Might change tack and upgrade the better-half's car so it can tow the boat on the flat... haven't broken that to her yet

Now to get the work done in time for lifting the boat from Donegal to get to Dun Laoghaire by the time the guys get over from Carnarvon.

Don't know about them XC70 know a couple of people that are having gearbox issues when towing
