Well you are sort of right, if you don't drive them and keep on top of them.......

My 1999 D2 is absolutely awesome in comparison

But having said that, I can leave the D1 for months and just jump straight in and she runs like a sewing machine.....

I just need to blow the tyres up now

I also look after a fleet of Defenders which do what it says on the tin, certainly not perfect and all have their faults but the drivers mostly like them.

Well, I've taken a load of bolts out & got stuck on one side. Oh and got covered in coolant, maybe thats a sign of affection or something.

I've had a look at some of the Landrover forums but they all seem a bit scary, can anyone recommend a friendly one ?

Mister, you could have saved yourself the trouble. The bolts will come out of their own accord, as will the coolant. Just wait and it'll do it all for you, including the first stages of a body replacement and heart reset. You shan't find anything wrong, until you run it for 100 or so miles, after which the same symptoms will appear, over and over and over until you "fall in love with it".

Sorry, but there's an old familiar tale here, which usually ends something like this............. unless you're handy with spanners and keen to use 'em, avoid old sheds.

Persuaded a couple of blokes to help and the head is now off !

I'm keen to enough to use spanners etc, just get fed up when they don't work as expected. I don't really know enough about what things are called to be able to easily ask for help unless someone is looking at it.

Now I just need to get up early and find a little place with no signs and a man in a shed to skim it, then get the same pair of bribable lovelies to show me how it all goes back together....

It shan't be the spanners that won't work Shaz, but the bolts. They'll be made of that Coventry stuff called "chocolate".
Don't despair though, just stay away. Seriously, stay away.........very far away.

Dont forget to replace the thermostat as a matter of course, Check carefully the condition of the radiator(fins and leaks) and give close scrutiny to all the coolant hoses.
Was the gasket obviously blown? If not the head should be pressure/crack tested. and if you got it really hot the piston rings may be damaged, in which case that issue will need addressing while the head is already off,
Unfortunately then its a case of where do you stop!!! Full engine rebuild or weigh it in for scrap??

sometimes though even new kit breaks ..........especially some new outboards, then people are grateful for a tow home off an old shed.

The 300Tdi, 200Tdi, 2.5TD, 2.25D,and the first 2.0 diesel are all a development of the original 2.25L, Rover petrol engine fom 1960 with varying degrees of sucess. The 200Tdi is probably the least problematic.
IMO none of them are a really great engine, though Tdi's aren't bad, they are all a bit long in the tooth now but at least spares are really cheap though and theyr'e very easy to fix.

None of them are problematic if a timely maintenance schedule is followed and cared for. The 300tdi is a very reliable engine that is easy to work on if it is taken care of.

Are you saying the 2.5TD wasn't a piece of crap? you must be the only person I have ever come across that thinks that.
The 15J was poor enough, but to take an already unreliable engine and turbocharge it (19J) was just asking for trouble
The power increase in the '19J' engine led to problems with pistons and cylinder blocks cracking, sometimes at very low mileages. Fuel economy was also poor compared to the best of the Japanese competition.
The Tdi engines are pretty good, but they are no Isuzu 4JB1T in terms of longevity Thats why theres a fair few Landrovers in the UK running Isuzu motors.
LDV minibusses used 15J engines too, They used to last 6 months in the service buses, so all got replaced with Isuzu engined by the main dealer.

Most people I'v spoken to over the years reckon The 200 tdi was the best all rounder , and that includes me.
