Discovery 3, X5 or Touareg..

OK, me and her have decided it's time for a new car so we are selling both our motors and having one car between us as we have a van anyway for the business. I thought a family saloon would do but she's decided she wants a Discovery 3, an X5, or perhaps a Touareg (is that spelled right).

Any horror stories?
what to watch for etc?
Advice from current owners?
Running costs?
Model quirks?
Years to avoid?
Thanks...

Taking the kids to school of course, why do they have another use?

Indeed, rightly or wrongly she would refer to that as a ship's anchor

If it really is only as a Chelsea Tractor, the latest X5 is the daddy. If you want a real 4x4, buy a D3.

The OH did however, manage to get our D3 stuck in a field gateway last night.

D3/4...no horror stories, haven't seen the dealer since we picked them up, all the toys we could wish for, 25mpg overall from auto, can squeeze 30mpg on a run but it's hard, very hard, would go auto not manual but that's a personal comment and doesn't imply anything worng with the manual gearbox...'Autocar' magazine one or two weeks ago had an article about to buy a D3 for <£15k - included the things to look for and avoid. If you can't get hold of it and want it drop me a PM and I'll photocopy and post it Friend had an X5 but flogged it for a Lexus 4X4 He hates it...all those batteries and other shit and does no more mpg than my D4 and it isn't really a 4X4

Sorry if I have offended you by answering your thread in an honest manner. I was speaking from experience and it has been voted the best tow car more than once.

No, not offended Jambo. All input greatly appreciated, a friend of mine has a Sorento and speaks highly of it. Unfortunately it's just not on the mrs' shortlist.

Mollers said a fair point the X5 is a nice car... and so is the toerag .. but the VW is too dam small , but the X is no off roader, so if you need to mount a kerb in the tesco car park, the disco it is ... I just dont like bits falling off my motors though and neither do I like expensive repair bills, so I bought german since 2000, and my piggy bank aint seen any action since then .. ok so all my motors have been nearly new .. but thats the way to buy em IMO As an old army general remarked to my dad many years ago "You can say what you like about the Bosch, but they dont half know how to build a motor" (spoken whilst twiddeling handlebar moustache)

I had 3 big BM diesels in a row inc. an X5. All three were bulletproof. The D3 spent a week at the main dealers last week with a niggly seat memory module issue which took some tracking down. They hit me for 2hrs labour which was reasonable. LR parts are also reasonable, BM are expensive, Mitsubishi are criminal.
