You don't buy a 'fully' calibrated optimised engine management re-map for 50 or even 200.
If you get a decent map you shouldn't have any smoke coming out the back.

I have an X5 M sport 08 plate with the planet raping 4.8 in it and I know this is on older thread... but I gotta tell ya .... you aint never seen a big car like this for road holding .. its foo*in' awesome.. hit the sport button, which stiffens the suspension, put the shifter into dynamic shift mode and hit the loud pedal .......... jeeeeesus .... 'kin ell does it half go .. chuck it into corners and it comes out like a cork from a bottle straight into the next one .. its got disk brakes the size of dinner plates,.. so it stops as well as it goes... I've had a few fast motors, but I cant believe how that thing goes and sticks to the road given its size !!

The engineers have gone to extraordinary lengths to sort the handling.. the V8 sits low in the chassis for example, and the bonnet is so light , it wobbles when you open it, just to keep all the weight low... off roading is a no no .. its not that kind of car .. I can see why they developed the X6 when you see how this thing goes and handles, but I dont think they went down the right path with it and its almost a directionless design path .. they should just have revelled in the X5 abilities on the road and left it like that.

On an A road .. when you floor it to overtake.. the biggest problem you have because it builds speed so quickly is watching for all the twats who dont check their mirrors before pulling out in front of you

But yess it does have a down side .. the fact that petrol costs 1.22 per litre

If it doesn't have a solid front axle, it isn't a real 4x4 !

I'm wondering why a Toyota Landcruiser or Nissan Patrol aren't being considered. Like a Landrover, they are both real 4x4s, but the Landcruiser & Patrol come with Japanese reliability & longevity.

Though not a real 4x4, the Touareg's V10 diesel sure sounds like a fantastic engine!
