I usually get about 230 miles to a tankful from my D2 V8 auto but that is mostly around town. With a bit of a run included, it can easily crack 300 miles to the tankful, there aren't enough roads here for me to be bothered about doing a long run for a whole tankful to figure out what you would get using a whole tank at cruising speed but I would think 350+ ought to be possible.

I'm starting to think that my D1 V8 is positively economical. I have the 3.9 V8 XS and get about 260 miles to 80 litres and I am not one to drive economically. It sounds very sexy but very very costly to run. Thinking about a LPG conv but not sure it is worth it for a P reg car! Would I change her - no...

Dont trust the trip recorder...

I've a nasty feeling my speedo and odometer are way off the mark after using TomTom and my marine gps on the dashboard.

I used this for my last trip to Swanage with the Landrover V8 3.5 110CSW, works out to about 15 mpg (2 people back loaded up and towing out Delta 1.2 tonnes)

GPS is not very accurate at measuring distance unless it is a straight road.

The Police used to have measured miles in certain places to calibrate their instruments - haven't seen one for a while though.

I reckon the breadcrumb trail/track log is quite accurate - my eTrex seems to be anyway.

Waypoint to waypoint would only work in a straight line though

So you're a badge snob?

Foe example, I've had very reliable cars from Hyundai, my next door neighbour has a Hyundai which she thinks is great. Not a "prestige" brand, but very reliable in my experience. I've never driven a Kia though, have you had a bad experience with one?

No I am not a badge snob - i am no fan of Audi!!!

I had a few audis on hire and they did feel very solid but oh so boring to drive. i rmember getting out of an A6 estate into an alfa 156 and thought YUCH - the Alfa felt so flimsy and cheap. After 1hr of driving though I didn't want to give the Alfa back. and after 15,000 miles of very hard driving the Alfa was in better shape than the Audi.

As to Kia I have no direct experience BUT my tame Mechanic works for a large Nissan - Hyundai - Kia main dealer and he is horrified by what he sees. Yes they have very long warantees which is just as well - head gaskets and crank failiures at 25,000 miles!!!

have a blast in Searider's Audi S4..or any of the RS models and boring wont be on your lips

I reckon this survey is flawed somehow..cant put my finger on why, just gut feel. A lot of the owners on rs246.com get warranty direct cover just so they can claim for upgrades after a year of track days or fast road driving. RS Audi's and Porsche cars tend to be driven hard and bits inevitably go on them..warranty direct cover for an RS6 (53 plate) is around £1200 per year - drive an RS6 hard and the Dynamic Ride Control will go, and warranty direct cover the cost of £3,500 worth of replacements and not only that, they will pay for much improved aftermarket ones if you ask. It seems like the reason Porsche and Audi are so high is because of owners doing the maths with upgrades v's warranty cost - LR/Alfa and Jeep no idea..

Top performing car on that index is a Suzuki Vitara - cant believe anyone has ever thrashed one hence low claims / high reliability.

I have driven an RS4 and it was good but it just didn't have the animal appeal of some other cars - also 4x4 still doesn't give you the feel or balance - too much understeer and the torsen diffs can be snatchy. They also have a nasty habit of bogging down off the line unless you slip the clutch which isn't good.

it seems to me newer cars just aren't as alive as the older ones. Drive a Ferrari 360 vs a 512 and you will know what I mean - the modern car may be faster but it lacks something - I bet it's the same with the 911...........
