Going down hills again you change down to give some engine braking but it is less than a manual.
I have no problem towing with my Auto & leave it in drive, but do use the gears to slow down & going down hill to save my disk brakes as 3 tones dose tend to get through them faster than most cars!
My average diesel is 23mpg & as low as 12mpg towing!

Well that doesnt' sound too bad for a V8. My 4 cylinder 2.0 L Kia only manages 25 MPG tops. I haven't done much long haul towing with it but recon that it might be getting about 20 MPG if not a little worse.

So what size fuel tank has a Disco?

I think I'll keep my ratty old Isuzu for a bit longer. I'm getting 28mpg towing the 5.4 on A-roads.

My Discovery 300tdi will do 26mpg towing 3.5 tons - not bad - I actually seem to use LESS when towing - maybe cos I have to slow down!!!

Thats pretty good for an Isuzu, or is that a 2.8 then ? and not the 3.0 or 3.1's

It's a 2.8-but one of the last and a Jap import with EGR. Wouldn't touch a 3.1 with someone elses!

I get about the same out of my 2.8 isuzu landrover, 28-30 towing less when not towing cos i go faster!! its brilliant for towing, its in a different league to a v8, with its big intercooler (retrofitted) it pulls way better than a V8, ultimately maybe not as powerful as a 3.9 but its got it all at 1500rpm where you need it when towing. Thats not an opinion ita a fact! i know cos it had a v8 fitted before the isuzu since then the gearbox has has a good rest! hills that the v8 needed 3rd gear for the isusu engine does in 5th.

I'd hog it then the way things are going .. plus you wont have any of the injector/ glow issues that are abounding these days with the 3.0/3.1

I had a series 2 disco V8, lovely car to drive however, if I remember right it was a 90 ltr tank and it did about 200 miles on that...

the point made re towing I thought was accurate, the engine always seemed to be needing a lot of revs to do the job. and I only ever towed wee things with it.

Ive owned 2 v8 disco's a 3.5 and a 4.0 and never managed more than 12 mpg, I also owned a 4.0 range rover and that did the same. I had the 3.5 disco gas converted and it went from 70 miles on £20 of petrol to 170 miles on £20 of gas but that was about 10 years ago.

Ok, so it's gas if it's a V8 or just go for a diesel then. The petrol models are selling for very good prices......I wonder why

My Defender 110(manual) and my Range Rover classic(auto) are both V8s - they will both tow anything you want to - fuel consumption on both is about 18 to 20mpg on a run. Even the carb Defender!!!

Yeh, but you also seem to think a Disco has a wow factor.

Well my girlfirend loves it - other drivers are terrified of it - and my mates kids are up on the roof rack before you can blink - not only that but it's serious FUN to drive.

A very good mate of mine has a new Porsche Cayenne - once the novelty wore off he went back to his old 90 pickup which he's had fully restored - he loves it but when he goes to Austria on holiday his wife makes him take the Porsche - can't think why!!!
