I've crawled under the gate and walked through to your end a couple of times just to say that I have done it. 3.2 miles long if I'm correct. which was some feat of engineering in those days.

In the beach buggy days a mate and I drove through the tunnel...we'd like to claim the subterranean Lancashire to Yorkshire landspeed record. He hit 70mph but it was a bit hairy especially the pile of sand and bricks looming out of the 6V darkness

No, fraid not. We also took an inflatable in and went through the side tunnels into the canal. Couldn't get far though, too many roof falls, and pretty scary when a train went through one of the used tunnels

Spent some time tweaking the TDi's for an MOD test. We extensively modified a 200 that produced 198 BHP and 360 ft lbs of torque. Problem was the bores only lasted 20,000 miles and it was not very eco friendly to be around. The 300 was easier to tweak, but the early ones had problems with the cambelt walking off the crap pressed tin pulleys and the snapping.
The 200 TDi can be prone to headgasket problems, easy fix doesn't usually damage the head if caught in time. The 300's are prone to cracking the exhaust housing around the waste gate, especially if it has had the pump tweaked.
Both engines are better than the TD5 in my books.

I can't imagine why they would have bunged a gate on it - killjoys the lot of 'em.
