The Discovery 1 is pretty agricultural - the best is the Disco 2 as it still has been axles and a proper chassis but is a lot more refined.

The Disco 3/4 is incredible - far far better on road but in extreme conditions beam axles are much tougher - less likely to get hung up and work better over boulders etc.

Someone pointed out the integrity of the tow hitch. That is a very good point. A proper chassis/rear crossmember is essential for a tough attachment point. On road towing is ok with modern towbars but offroad its a different story as they get lots of sideloads they were never designed for.

As to the Mer ML a mate of mine bought one after his Discovery 1 - much more refined and much nicer to drive - but crap at towing his horseboxes over rough ground. He had a nasty shock when he took his usual shortcut out of Tesco over a concrete curb/bank. Fine in the Disco - the Merc turned into a seesaw!!!

I realise I may be repeating myself, but the V10 5 litre VW Tuareg will tow pretty much anything, has air suspension so it can be raised and lowered and their second hand values are the lowest of anything else - don't ask me why as they are as reliable as any other VW!

Loony fuel consumption Cookee. A Disco 3 will do the air suss thing with a little better mpg. The residual on a D3 is strong though.

On a trip up to Northumberland and Edinburgh with lots of varied driving from motorway to single tracks stuff in National parks I got over 25mpg over the week - not bad for what you get I think, and the performance is outstanding to say the least!

Yep, not bad. We'd expect 30 on a long trip from the D3, 24ish around town.

Keep a close eye on tyre pressures Cookee, it helps considerably. I run between the recommended unloaded and loaded pressures

probably insurance and mainly fuel economy. My boss has one and if he floors it he has to head for the garage! He'll be there in no time but I have to take a pay cut for him to fill it up. Awesome piece of kit if you do no mileage.

Groomie fitted Ford Ka seats in his. Driving it is actually not bad now if you remove your rt arm at the shoulder.
