Bmw X5

I've just gone from one extreme to another... Swapped my Honda S2000 for a 2 year old X5.

The intention was to have a car for towiing & also to slow me down on the road. The first is fine but following a remap of the coal burner we now have 290 bhp on tap & the second criteria has not worked. What a tool

Anyone else had experience of uprated diesel engines?

Cheers

Ian

yep, the fiat ducato has been uprated 50% so now it is

less ssslllllloooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwww

and is just sloooow

it is a 5.5 ton motorhome which is why it needed a bit of a boost

was done from new and cost 2.5k and drives nicely compared to non upgraded models

a lot of caravanners you talk to will chip up their diesel pull cars so is not uncommon and can give more mpg

ps love x5's, ideally would like to go for the 4.6 but could be tempted for a diesel with nearly 300hp thats for sure

5.5 Tonnes on a Ducato? Jeez...I didn't think they went up that big. Is it the Ducato chassis or Al-Ko/A.N other ? What size is the engine? How slow is slow compared to say a 3.5 tonne Ford transit based camper?

it is a bit of a big beast for sure

i think the chassis is an alko maxi chassis or something like that, it has 6 wheels and is tag axle

the engine is the 2.8 td one and is around 175hp, it has been chipped and has modified intercooler etc

i am told it will cruise nicely at around 80 if it needs to in europe

it will hold its own against smaller motorhomes but tend not to race around as bits go flying everywhere, plates, cups, etc etc

it does handle nicely (or not as bad as you would think!!) for the size thanks to the chassis and tag axles at the back and works well on windy days etc as is quite stable

300 td hp pusher would be nicer

here is the model

http://www.motorholme.co.uk/motorhomes/7b_model.htm

ps they are plated to 5.2T on the motorhome outside and 5.5T on the chassis!

believe it or not i dont think many X5 owners buy an X5 with a view of using it for offroading

from memory..and it's been parked up for a few months...single figures for short hops up to 12 on a run....maybe a few percent more on petrol....but at (just increased!!) 46p Litre..I'll live with that and it is soooooo nice to drive compared to a smaller turbo diesel...

<edit> Just checked Gas website and find you can still pay as little as 41p/litre in this area...

One of the best tarmac tow vehicles on the market, superb for dragging ribs long distances and wont get stuck on a slip. Why would you want to go offroad with it? I have a Mitzy for that. It's a 4x4 not an 'off-roader'.
How does your Ferrari tow?
