Beware road tax on older cars

Just seen this article. The new higher tax rate for cars over 225g of CO2 was supposed to apply to new cars only. It now turns out the government didn't tell the whole truth. It will also apply to cars up to 7 years old!!!

This means that soon you will almost have to give away something like a Discovery or any other 4x4 - even a diesel - the 2nd hand values will hit the floor. Even things like Mondeos with bigger engines will be effected.

well if it is just a extra £200 a year then it dose not make much difference as that is less than 2 tanks of fuel for me!!
Fuel prices are going to kill the second hand market, but I did not buy my car as a investment!

The extra cost is irrelevant, the fuel costs of a vehicle of that type outweigh the tax cost. It is just a way of smacking 4x4's with more tax due to the Chelsea tractor issue but some of us actually live in the country!

Not only that - just another £200 is quite a lot for some people - especially if they bought a large engined older car cheap. You have a CHOICE with new cars - you don't HAVE to buy it. You are a bit buggered if you already have one in that bracket!!!

Not really - a Discovery will do 28mpg - and if you run it on cooking oil the extra road tax DOES become a problem for some people...........

And just how many people run their cars or 4x4's on cooking oil?
Not many as there is not enough waste oil generated to provide for a fraction of the vehicles that would be able to use it.
While I don't agree with the tax system as set up for vehicles I can see that fuel taxes are a much larger proportion of what it costs me to run a vehicle.
Since some vehicles can run at 60mpg + it follows that someone that can afford 28mpg isn't going to be that badly affected compared to the extra fuel costs due to recent rises in fuel costs.

Well its getting serious now.. running a heavy goods is costing a lot of money in fuel. Back in 2000 they reduced the tax on HGV's hugely, due to the fuel protests then, when fuel was a huge amount less than it is now.

Now in VED terms I can run a 30 tonner for not much more than my X5 !! I dont know whether to be happy or sad ... but because of the fuel price.. I think sad wins the day still

I know several people who are living on the poverty line - they simply can't afford to buy a diesel car - petrol ones are so much cheaperto buy. Many older cars struggle to get 28mpg - it doesn't mean the poeple can also afford another £200 tax!!!

As to cooking oil you would be suprised - around here it's very common. At one time ASDA in Llanelli was selling more cooking oil than any other store!!!

Don't you remember the Frying Squad - police cracking down on people using cooking oil whislt it was still illegal.

Look at the prices in the article - cooking oil at 32p and diesel at 72p - now it's 97p and £1.20!!!

You are right - Glass's guide reckon 3yr old cars are now worth £600 less than similar cars last year. I reckon cars built just before 2001 will command a premium soon!!!

Well, today lots of folk will have the opportunity to tell the government exactly how well they are doing running the country. Yes it's only local elections but it is still an opportunity to explain the facts of life to them. So use your vote carefully.
