Not all cars have springs, some have air bags, some also have a self levelling function, like Active cornering, which means the body of the car doesn't roll as much, so all that energy is transferred through the system straight to the tyres, so they wear quicker.

Like I said, you're confusing springs, levelling and damping.

A 'spring' doesn't have to be made of steel coils: those are just one type of 'spring'...a spring can be an oil 'spring' - like in a hydraulic Citroen, a rubber 'spring' as in early non-BMW Mini's, or an air 'spring' such as in LR's, Jaguar's, MB's and trucks.

In all air sprung cars, the air provides the springing and directly replaces the steel coil springs of other cars. The air also - but separately - provides a hydraulic mechanism for the levelling function you talk of. This allows the level of a vehicle to be controlled - via an ECU - whether cornering, or under sharp braking or when heavily loaded. This keeps the contact patch of the tyre consistent with the road regardless of speed, braking or load. This managing of the tyre contact patch, through the air springing and levelling medium, is, in fact, an aid to reduced tyre wear not a mechanism that accelerates it.

If you're comparing, say, Disco 3/4 with a Defender for tyre wear, then factors like vehicle weight, vehicle performance potential, vehicle usage profile - whether it's the type of vehicle likely to be driven quicker or slower - tyre aspect ratio, tyre rubber mix, tyre design brief etc etc would be more significant than whether it was on air springs or not

Fair enough, I agree with alot of what you said, others bits I don't.

Your missing my point though about the energy transfer through the car, if a car rolls, some energy is going into making the car roll, if it's level, the energy goes straight through the suspension into the tyres.

Obviously it's nicer to drive through the corners, but that's not what we are talking about. It's about tyre wear.

It's about action and reaction and weight transfer and the effects on tyre geometry and thus tyre wear...but, OK, I officially give up

Grown nobburs or not, I want to know why the fekkers (BMW) think its ok to bin decent tyres that have good tread on them all over, but outrageous wear on the 'inside' shoulders on a non steering axle and call it 'normal' ?

anyway whats the definition of normal ?
