The comments on the maverick are interesting as there are a few "bargains" out there.....check this out....

The comments I made are based on one I saw my mate welding - if you are tempted pay attention to where the coils attach to the rear chassis.

Doesnt HISC have a tractor that is used to facilitate launching and recovery am sure it is run by the chap who has a black 6 metre Humber (forgotten his name)

Hi, your right but the tractor is used for the big cruiser boats when bringing them out for the winter rather than the ribs, His name is Nick, great guy...

There is a winch which does work fairly well but just thought I would be lazy and try and get a 4x4 for 6 months which I can sell on at the end of the summer if i need the money and hopefully not loose to much, guess the trouble is it could be so hit and miss. Get one that works perfectly or one that blows a head gasket on day 2 and needs money poured into it for it to be worth anything.... dilemas dilemas!!

I had a Terrano II for 5 years - 1993 L - 73,000 when I bought it can't remember how many when I sold it...

Main problems I had were clutch and gearbox but I am a fussy bugger so it may have been me...

Now have '56 plate Navara D40, good vehicle but it is a Nissan not a BMW or RR.

Had a 1985 Suzuki SJ in 1996, had done 85,000 miles when I bought it - had it for 2 years cost me £19.00 for a new choke cable and sold it for £50 more than I paid for it!!

Never made any money on a car since...

If the trailer wheels sink a little while recovering, the RAV4 may have trouble extracting it - I don't think they have a low ratio box. The Frontera would have no problems in this respect. I have used a Defender to easily move a slightly embedded trailer (and 6m RIB) that a RAV was unable to shift. Hope this helps in your decision.

If the wheels look like they are going to sink use a good bit of rope and higher ground. No need for 4WD.

If your trailer (and RIB) have sunk 3 inches in wet sand, your 4x4 is burning her clutch in 1st gear, your wheels aren't spinning (in four wheel drive) and you can't pop the tow out of the sand, how is a good length of rope and a car going to help? Keep in mind that you're on a beach, 100 meters from a grass foreshore...

Take a look around for an Isuzu Mu.I've got one. Same shell as the frontera sport but everything else is blagged from the old 2.8 Isuzu Trooper. Pulls like a train and doesn't rot like a trooper. They go from £500 to £2k depending on how many people have dented them.
If you buy one you won't want to sell it.

Thanks again for the thoughts. The Isuzu MU looks awesome and my fav at the moment but they appear to be few and far between, I have just missed a great little one on ebay was local and sold for £526.... :-(

Thanks for all the advice, have ended up with a 1997 Frontera, only 60k and has lots of work done by a main dealer so I am very happy paid £900 and is taxed and MOT'd till the end of this year.... Thanks for all the help....

Bargain. You won't regret it.

Just make sure you use the 4 WD regularly to stop things seizing up. Not a Frontera fault but something you should do with all 4 WDs that aren't permanent.

And always remember to engage the front hubs BEFORE you need them!

Mine doesn't have locking front hubs. Not manual ones anyway. Thats the 2002 version. Not too sure about the 97 Motor as its a totally different engine etc.

They look like auto hubs. If you can find an early one with freewheeling hubs they are worth getting-they don't go wrong and your fuel bill will go down a bit. It also means you can use low range with only 2 wheels driven so the centre diff doesn't wind itself up.
