4x4 choice

Hello, I am thinking getting a roomy 4x4 and a discovery fits the bill.
Due to prices I will be limited to something in the 1990`s and I was wondering if there were any "known issues" with these vehicles.
Another possibility is the land cruiser, but again, I dont know much about these vehicles.
Any thoughts?

the boot floor tends to rust pretty well also around the forward section of the rear arches, landys will usually need a track rod end or steering joint come mot time, other than that they are ok

80 series 4.2 diesel manual landcruiser with low mileage would be the car to go for. there are still a lot of good ones out there.

Try telling that to all the circa 90's Disco owners whos engines overheated, warped the head, blew the gasket and screwed up their engines.
I can only think of one out of 5 owners in my old dive club that didn't need an engine rebuild or new engine by the time they were 4-5 years old.

The jury is still out on the Kia, I like it, it tows extremely well, is comfy, economical and seems pretty loaded with toys. Ask me in a few years when I will know it it will last and is reliable.

Get a nice Vauxhall Monterey or an Isuzu trooper 3.1 TD, they're the same car (trooper). Brilliant and never let me down in the year I've had it with the exception of the rad falling to bits, but that was a known problem before I bought it.

It's roomy and responsive (much better than a couple of Discos I've driven) and mine returns a reliable 30 mpg (33 on a run and 28 with the trailer attached).

Loads of spares for them on ebay too, but you won't need em!

I'd keep quiet too if i had a KIA, probably blacken out the windows too and build a garage so nobody saw me get in and out of it.

There must be something right with them as the Sorento has been voted the European towing car of the year four times and they have a seven year warranty. maybe it is just a bit of 'badge' snobbery!!

Definitely badge snobbery, rightly or wrongly, unfortunately i still care to some degree about my street credibility, though with each year of age, the balance shifts from credibility to value. When I'm a grandad, maybe i'll get a kia. For now, I just couldn't do it.

Skoda on the other hand, they seem to have built some credibility, I'd get one of them at about 45.

It's a crazy materialistic, peer pressured and marketing orientated world we live in!

Thanks for the replies, I had not appreciated the land rover had so many problems.
I will bear the isuzu in mind but the landcruisers seem to have a good rep.
This will not be doing a lot of miles by the way.

Cheers Paul exactly how I felt before I hit 60!! I have now to my credit I might add baught one and for the last two years it has done what it says on the label. I must confess to being a convert especially the towing aspect as Bruce says it is effortless and the car itself is well equip and comfortable and not to sore in the pocket. Thats why I do stick up for them, plus I dont give a shit about my street cred anymore, it suits me and does the job well I mean come on it has a Merc engine and all that.

Went through similar thing earlier this year, my choice came down to a Discovery, Landcruiser, Shogun.

Discovery's seem to have to many problems, the Landcruiser is great but quite pricey so i went for a Shogun in the end. So far its been great, tows the rib really well, pretty noisy though.

My sister has a Kia, has had nothing but bother with it and rubbish service from the dealership.
