Nick.
I have a Discovery (300tdi) and its almost amusing how many niggles they have. This is my second, a friend also has the same model and they all suffer from it. It's a constant battle to have everything working, just little things like switches, lights, cruise control etc. You'll soon discover how to fix things though! In the 5 or so months I've had mine, I've had to have a new engine, and this week I've had to put a new alternator in. However it's a very comfortable car, it's second to none on the slipway (9m RIB no problem at all) and I just like the way they look

There's a lot of bllx talked about Discovery reliability - I have an eight year old Series 2 V8 which I have owned from new and apart from service items it has had very little done to it - a couple of new viscous fan couplings, a leak into the interior (cross threaded bolt in the bonnet), and probably one or two other things I forget but nothing much.

My father has a 1998 300Tdi Disco on the farm which he drives like he stole it and apart from suspension bushes (it's always used on awful roads and off-road so eats suspension bushes like all vehicles here) it has also had nothing much done to it that isn't fair wear and tear - think it had a new steering damper a few years ago and the inevitable new viscous fan every couple of years but that is about all.

I really don't know what people do to them over there find a decent one, a tame independent with good labour rates and they are great vehicles, except for the Discovery 3 which I would not touch with your barge pole never mind my own, lovely vehicle when it works, therein lies the problem...

Cheers Paul exactly how I felt before I hit 60!! I have now to my credit I might add baught one and for the last two years it has done what it says on the label. I must confess to being a convert especially the towing aspect as Bruce says it is effortless and the car itself is well equip and comfortable and not to sore in the pocket. Thats why I do stick up for them, plus I dont give a shit about my street cred anymore, it suits me and does the job well I mean come on it has a Merc engine and all that.
Cheers mate and happy motoring

I am only in my 40's and don't care about a badge. Maybe its because I live outside the city but neither does anyone else around me.
If having a "badge" means a Landy then I am quite happy to do without

But it's a "badge" that tells you so much about the owner!

like "Hey, I can afford the repair bills!"

As it 'appens, (now then, now then) Landy bills are not so bad. Bits are reasonable and there are plenty of Landy specialists about. Mitzy bits and main stealer prices are utter robbery.

Not sure how Kia and Hyumpi parts compare?

I have to confess to being a Kia Sorento owner and it pulls my rib up beaches effortlessly, and towing is the same.

Isn't it people with small apendages that have to have a "badge"?

So, is a Kia considered not to be a "badge" and therefore owned/driven by big c*cks?

As a support network for each other when you've collectively calculated depreciation over a 12 month period?

Chill man!

Celebrate being a Kia owner and pity those of us having to suffer Land Rover ownership.

Actually I looked into this when comparing various vehicles, I don't tend to change my tow vehicle very often.
The first three years of Sorento ownership you would be as well standing in the shower tearing up tenners. The depreciation is fearfully large. However after three years it slows down and drops at approx the same amount as a Landy of similiar cost.
I bought a three year old vehicle at around 50% of new cost, for the same money it would have been a five year old equivalent. since depreciation drops at the same amount from now and the vehicles are worth much the same in two, three ten or 12 years old I reckon I am better off. The actual vehicle is still two years younger all the way through this time.
My only reservation as I said will be longevity and in a few years I'll have a better idea of this, other than that I don't regret the choice of vehicle despite having a badge that apparently tells eveyone I have a big c**ck. I think that what you meant surely?

Boot floor did for mine last MOT. Engine fine at 320000 miles though. Ah, now I remember though, the synchros in the gearbox were shot.

You might try a nissan patrol diesel, ours at work is 10 yrs old with about 120k on the clock and although it hasn't had a hard life its been pretty good. The only major expense has recently been a gearbox rebuild, cost 2K but its got plenty of room, is good on the beach/camp sites and seems to tow well.

Driven gently I think it can do around 30mpg! Its also the only car I can drive from the south of england to skye and not get out of with back ache. With its leather seats its easy to keep clean and has aircon/ heated seats etc.
