I'd probably go for a Freelander 2. You'd get something pretty good for that money and probably some change.

I am far to mean to spend that much on a car though and paid about 10% of your budget for an old Grand Vitara. I wouldn't want to do a lot of long distance driving in it, but it's OK and surprisingly handy off road.

I've got an old 52 reg Honda CRV that happily pulls my 6m, 1.5t Ribeye. It does bounce a little over the bigger bumps but it's great in all respects. It's only 4 wheel drive when it senses the front wheels slipping too so saves a bit of fuel.

I have however just bought a Disco3 and may be looking to get rid of the CRV (not decided yet) but that's for other reasons, not that it can't pull the boat.

Can't believe I'm suggesting one of these. Went to the Artic Circle with one this year and it never missed a beat. Although I did have to winch it out twice with my Land Rover !

Seem to be good cars and good spec for the money.

110 - nice, but a hard drive if you're towing distances. Easy front towhitch fitout. Turning circle of the Queen Mary. Slightly over budget.

Disco - A gentleman's conveyance. In budget.

Hilux - nice drive, interior apparently styled by Citroen. Will be called the Talivan. £1712 over budget.

I ran a Mitsubishi Challenger for three years in the French Alps. It was 4 years old when I bought it and it was a brilliant vehicle. Friends of mine have land rovers, some have had problems some have not - whilst I'm sure they are sturdy vehicles I think the Japs vehicles are more comfortable and fully loaded....incoming !
