Just rechecked the figures and they have changed tghe way they are measured. Apparently the US figures USED to exclude Alaska but not any more.

The new figures are 7706m for the Uk and 12352m for the USA - still not bad for a very small country and the longest in Europe.

Hope you are joking on the last comment or do Yanks REALLY believe it???

I was just going to mention Canada!!! Longest in the World.

And talking of Canada did you realise even the South of the Uk is quite a bit further North than you are in Ontario???

We also claim the highest tides at a "mean" height of about 52' in the Bay of Fundy...

I did. In fact I was fiddling about on my GPS the other day (in the first snow of the year) and realised that I was on roughly in the same latitude as the southern part of France. Tobermory is condsidered to be in "northern Ontario". In fact, it is nowhere near "northern" Ontario and in no way could be considered anything short of "southern Canada". About 98% of our country is essentially unoccupied... by people anyway!

Since we probably all have access to charts or GPS, my house is here:

N45 15.257' W 81 39.200

The key danger of the Bristol Channel is the constantly shifting sand and mud, which causes the shipping channels to migrate. Also the extremely fast tides, cause a lot of sailing dinghies to get in to trouble when the winds are low, as they find themselves drifting out to sea!

both these factors are due to the high tidal range

I was careful to use the word "claim" in my Fundy comment. I appreciate that there are many factors that go into measuring something so variable as a tide. Here, in the Great Lakes, we are not bothered by pesky tides. And we can drink the water we're floating in. (At least here in Tobermory!)

Yes, UK has us to thank down here at 17.45 N x 64 W for warming the water that we send north then East in the Gulf Stream for keeping the Glaciers away from London!

Speaking of massive coast lines....I did a little figuring on mine and it comes in at a whopping 112 statuate miles! Is bigger always better?

Glad you did because on a day to day basis ours are at least as high. it is a mjor curse 99% of the time but it does have some advantages i suppose - like beaching your boat for 7 hrs to scrub off the barnacles or picking cockles but that's about it!!!

I was just looking at your little island on Google Earth. It is "somewhat" smaller than Canada, but I am envious none-the-less!

If you think the Britsol Channel itself is bad you should see the Lougher/Burry estuary - it's a nightmare. Easy enough in my RIB but wouldn't fancy using a sailing boat there. You can be 5 miles out and in 6' of water!!! In fact you can sometimes get out and walk......

this site claims UK is 19,000 km, and USA 133,000 km : http://earthtrends.wri.org/text/coas...riable-61.html

Wikipedia claims UK is ~ 12600 km,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_coastline and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geograp...gdom#Coastline

and US is 19,924 km http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geograp..._United_States

the CIA factbook (where I usually look for useful/useless country statistics) has similar although slightly different numbers: https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications...k/geos/uk.html and
https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications...k/geos/us.html

even the most "Generous" estimates for the UK are shorter than the most conservative for the US!

Also not convinced it is a good argument. Look at ribnet, their are far more ribs on the relatively straight south coast than there are on the west coast, outerhebrides or nothern isles all of which have far greater coast lines (per region, per capita, per land area or however you want to describe it).

Didn't you see my later post with the revised figures??? My source was also the CIA factbook amongst others. They used to be quoted as the UK being longer but they had excluded Alaska!!!

sorry cod - I hadn't finished reading the thread, and hadn't got to your retraction/correction. However, Manos might be on shortly pointing out that your latest claim (UK longest in Europe) doesn't fit with the "facts" either! As might the various Ribnetters in Norway!

Alaska Included

Alaska has more coastline than the contiguous united states or "lower 48", and should not be included. Either they don't like us, they think were frozen all of the time, or want to come visit, all of which are undesireable traits.
Jimmy

P.S. Are there any alaska ribbers out there other than me? I would like to find one.

I think the U.S. and Britain saved everybody else's ass if you really want my opinion...one country in particular not far from your east coast comes to mind...

And that does not consider the multitude of smaller inland lakes Canada abounds with, you guys definitely win the prize for the most, no doubt!

Jimmy, you just have to deal with being the one to lead all other Alaskans out of the darkness regarding ribs, someone has to do it! I do think one of those nice cabin ribs such as a Protector would be great for your neck of the woods... head to the Aleutians for a hunt, bring it back on the aft deck... heck, it would be great for my neck of the woods!
