New Speed Record!

I found myslf heading up the Niagara River yesterday after a dive on Lake Ontario. We made it up to just short of the Whirlpool Rapids before the water got pretty scary. The difference between GPS speed and speedo was about 10 - 12 mph...

Which of course meant we hauled ass coming back down...

With my nice new engine, we managed to hit 60.5 mph on the GPS, with 2 people, 2 dogs, and a load of dive gear!

I must confess, it was moderately terrifying... but damn fun!

A few pics...

A few pics...

Fort George... Note the flag and Fort Niagara on the US side... The bottom of the river is littered with cannon balls from the war of 1812.

The Bridge over the Niagara Gorge... and a busy border crossing. The current here was about 8 mph.

One of the power generation stations. The Niagara Peninsula is filled with tunnels channeling water to these stations. The current was up to 10 mph here. I stopped taking pics as it was difficult to stear the boat... lots of little whilrpools and the First Mate was complaining! This is where we hit 60 on the way back!

My new house There's a surprisingly few houses along the gorge... most of it is parkland, a credit to both countries!
