How many RIBs ??

How mant RIB's does it take to dock an Americas cup contender.?
Well six of course !
For a country with a lack of history as far as RIBs are concerned, I sure came across a lot this week.

The BMW Oracle team have 6 to support its BOR 90 boat.
Then two mates with RIBs for press boats.
One nice Proector twin for the VIP's
And Me

Heres what we were chasing

I was next to the boat that shot the video
cheers Dal

That is so cool. Great pics. I missed out. I have seen the Oracle trimaran being towed on the Bay a couple of times. Spotted it going out while I was coming back in with insufficient gas to run out and see it sail. Argh. Thanks for posting!

Its an ugly thing, but high tech and cool I love the helm position.. man I could ride that thing all day with a smile , bet the crew get really knackered though.

I was watching a boat on you tube towing two water skiers it was going so fast, awesome to see up on one pontoon too !

see if I can find it

Seen that video before but lost it again. Great stuff.

This one is pretty good as well - Groupama 3 - holds the transatlantic record.

"Sailing the 105-footer at an average speed of 29 knots, the team completed the 2925-mile course from New York to the Lizard (United Kingdom) in 4 days, 3 hours, 57 minutes, 54 seconds. Along the way, Groupama 3 also set a new 24-hour distance record, 794 nautical miles, averaging over 33 knots on the day. "

Some of these things are now almost hitting 50kts - would take some RIB to keep up!!!

Having said that if it get nasty out there I would rather a ketch with an 11ft draft any day..........

Codders,
actually the wife really misses Wales. The two or three hot summer months here cause me Hell!!! She's hot, she's sticky ,she's grumpy aghhh!!!!
All I here is, I bet it' s raining back home
Anyone got a low mileage trade

Me; sort of got used to it now

And this things a monster. Does 3 to 3.5 times the wind speed, so they have yet to really push it. I drop out of the chase at 30 knots. I'm bouncing around and she's cutting through the chop ,like she's on Ice skates !
They reckon 45 -50 knots is a possibility.
Unfortunately the crazy Alinghi team(who get to pick the race venue) have chosen a place where it averages 4-5 mph winds
So may have to wait until after the cup to really stretch her legs
cheers Dal

Kelson,
you will have to give me a wave if you see me , so we can meet !
They usually tow her offshore. However this day she raised the Main and was out running her tow; so they cut her loose in the Bay over by Harbour Island.
22 knots just on the main and she looked as though she wasnt moving.
You can hear the guy ramp up the engines in the video as he realizes he is getting left behind
cheers Dal

Incredible machines The next challanges must surely be for the crew in an endurance fasion .. to be able to operate a sailing craft in big seas at those speeds since i'll be surprised if they can be sailed from the cockpit alone

Hmmm. Rock Candy? (Sammy Hagar, in case you miss it.)

Well, OK; maybe not.

limeydal,

Sure do hope to meet out on the Bay. I've been trying a new sport, Foilboarding. So I have been running around with the fresh water big boat with loud music crew up on Lake Elsinore recently. Definitely a lot of fun. My illustrator finally got back from Brazil and sent me the art for the Californian. I will be sampling it this week. PM me an address and I'll pop one in the mail to you. Who knows? Maybe you will have a customer that wants something like this some day.

Did get some nice pictures of the foil riders throwing inverted tricks. New shirt design from same.
