California Burning

Well .got quite a wake up call at 3.30am yesterday ,by a neighbour who was keeping a close eye on the fires. I walked out the door ,to see fire coming down the mountain. Not quite a "mandatory evacuation" sitution but close enough for me.
I had already loaded the SUV with all our belongings , just in case.
So found another good use for the RIB on its trailer.
Just threw all the sleeping bags/pillows and tent into it and off we went.
Spent the day with the family at a mall until the fire had passed. (Luckily a nearby resevoir protected us from more serious conditions.

Funny at the Mall (which was designated an evacuation center) where there was about 100 horses/ goats/ llamas and even a couple of ostriches. Everyone semed to pull together ad the outpouring of help was amazing
At the Qualcom football stadium,so much food was turning up they had to turn it away.
Luckily we were able to return by 3.00pm the same day,but a lot of people were less fortunate
Looks like some of the northern fires will be burning into November !
Countless neighbourhoods have just been levelled and the region resembles a war zone.
The fire fighters are doing a tremendous job; full gear/85 degrees and double and triple shifts. Those guys are earing their money!
Couldn't believe the news when they showed a state map with all the fires burning!
One guy was shot dead today who was being approached by the police . (looking as though he was setting more fires at Arrowhead area. ) .Seems several of these fires are arson, and dont have much sympathy for the guy if the facts are accurate.
The sun is deep red as it sets tonight with all the smoke and ash in the air. It's going to be days before the air clears here in San Dieo and weeks for the northern regions between escondido and Los Angeles

Glad to hear you and yours are OK. Yes, it is a nightmare, but it appears that the people and the authorities are handling it very well. Last I heard on CNN was that 1500 houses lost and 500K people evacuated.
Regards, T.

Glad everyone is ok - did you see any of those amazing water bombers in action - the real ones not the helicopters with their little buckets???

This has to be the daddy of all waterbombers - a DC10 - what a sight. Can't see it skimming a lake though!!!

It's pretty crazy down there!! I hope the weather changes for you soon. I just had this fly over me today on it's way to California. Quite a sight they fly by dead reckoning so they were about 1000ft above me. Hopefully it helps...

I just love this "modern" technology - the Mars is incredible. Quite a few vids of them on youtube. So much better than the helicopters.

I've been watching this on TV and listening to it on the radio for the last couple of days and it was only on the way in this morning, when they said that San Diego was particularly threatened, that I suddenly of our cyber-mate LimeyDal. Good to see your post and know that you and the tribe are ok. Fingers crossed that the drop in breeze will slow the spread and that maybe some rain will fall along with the salt-water from the Mars (although I know none is forecast for a bit!).

Good pic too!!!!

Dal;

Glad you and your family are OK.

Winds are reportedly dying down; hopefully they'll get a better handle on things now.

Best of luck;

jky

I read an interesting article about how they never bother with controlled burning and scrub clearing in California - maybe they will start now.

My father lives in a remote area of Portugal - he has cleared all the scrub for about 100yds around his house - also helps his house is built of stone. I noticed the houses burnt out in California had almost no stone or brickwork.

Thanks

Many thanks for all your best wishes and it seems we were one of the luckier areas.
There is going to be a lot of finger pointing going on ,way after this mess has finished.
We had a real bad fire (Cedar fire ) exactly four years ago and seems we didnt learn any lessons from that
Following that fire they had an investigation to see what should be done in the future to prevent the same happening again.
So 4 years ago over a 140 new fire engines were due to be purchased.
Of that, only 17 were actually ordered
Of that ,zero have been delivered to date

Same with fixed wing aircraft.
2 of the huge air reserve cargo planes were to fitted with tanks able to hold fire retardent. They designed new tanks and then found they didnt fit the planes. So 4 years later they are still sitting on the tarmac !

Seems the issue with fighting fires is that the politicians are gambling with the alloted money. They divert it for other projects and each year they get away with it ,no-one really notices.
That is until the **** hits the fan and we have another bad fire season.

So yes,the people on a whole are coping well; but how much could have been avoided if the resources were available early on ,that were promised

Limedal I'm very happy for you not to have been burned out. I've been at sea and lost touch with the news. Hopefully the worst is over for your region.
