Berthing Costs in the USA

I was wondering where in the world is the most expensive place to berth a boat because I have a feeling it is on my doorstep at the river Hamble near Southampton on the South coast of the UK. You would pay 5 to 6000 pounds (about 10 to 12,000 US dollars) to keep a 30ft boat here for a year.

How does that compare with the USA. What is the most expensive place to berth a boat over there?

Most it'll run you around Boston is $155 a foot for the season (May to Oct). I think in some year-round places like California, it can be $25 per month per foot, which would get you to $9000 for the year, but that's just hearsay at this point.

I would venture a guess that the most expensive places in the states would be either Ft. Lauderdale on Florida's Gold Coast or San Diego/Los Angles in California. Lake Michigan around Chicago might be an eye opener as well.

How 'bout it Limeydal, what's the going rate in San Diego?

Speaking of Florida, the land of fun in the sun, where are the members of this forum from that area? It is surprising to me that I never see a post from that area.

Down here it's pretty reasonable. I trailer but as I recall my buddy Captain Pete pays around $300 a month for his 26 ft. Delta. I think though that the yard must charge around $300 an hour for labor based on a couple of repair bills I've had down there.

We have a lot of Federally protected waters here and increasingly they are installing moorings for transient vessels and charge per night. Where they have these, anchoring is prohibited to preserve the sea floor. The rules however on mooring on a permanent basis are lose to non-existant, in non protected water. I was reading about Hawaii a while back and they have very strict rules on laying at anchor there, very strict!

The costs in UK, between berthing and fuel are truly scary. You have my sympathy!

Below is where we are retiring to. About $300 per month, for a 30ft. boat.
Includes 24 hour security, toilets and showers, free secure parking and electricty to berth. Petrol at the refueling dock is $2.80 per US gallon. Free use of lauching slip but $10 per lift on the 10 ton crane. Location is San Carlos, Mexico.

Good Lord!!! Are you serious? We're paying about $0.96/litre CDN at the moment, and about $1.05 at the marina.

Oh, and in Tobermory, a 30' boot would be about $1700 for the season. But the season is only 6 months for most. It started blowing here last week and it won't stop now until the lake freezes in January...

Maybe now you realise why I get so bloody annoyed......

Britain has one of the cheapest pre tax petrol prices in the world - we have our own oil and some big efficient refineries - that makes it even worse!!!

these show 8m moorings NE Spain for aprox £40,000

I dont know if they do any long term rental but I guess they would be comparable with the uk but not up to Monaco levels. They are marina type berths built only recently. We took a look round the harbour the back end of august just to see if the fuel there is any cheaper.

The chap on the mobile looks as if his boat is a wisker over 8m. Perhaps theve rumbled him and by trying to raise the extra cash he's caused all these liquidity problems in the worlds money markets!

most of the moorings round this area are owned not rented and despite the fall in the spanish property market their still seems to be a shortage of moorings. I had a chap from Barcelona pestering me all last year trying to persuade me to sell mine.

I think you will find those are the prices for BUYING the moorings!!! Many countries sell them and then you can rent them out.

Yes that right The salesman would be on one hell of a commission if that was even a yearly rental!!!! As I said I don’t think they do long term rental but from the website they have visitor’s moorings.

I have no idea if there is a gong rate for privately renting from an owner but if we assumed he would settle for say a 10% return that would put it at £4,000 pa … so as I said comparable with the UK and not so far off the rate on the Hamble.

Maybe it's expensive in spain because most of the boats are British and they know what people are paying here!!! I was pleasantly suprised to notice that most of the mega yachts in Barcelona harbour were British.

Holy cow!

Are you sure that is the per annum price and the cost to lease it?

Even if it is annual it still makes Hamble the second most expensive in the world unless maybe Japan is dearer.
