Yamaha trim gauge not reading

All,
Can anybody assist.....?
F100a. No movement of the bars on the gauge. Slightly annoying as I like everything to work. Probably will never use them, but any ideas of probable cause.
I've read about a small plastic 'something' on the t&t motor which is vulnerable....!
Much appreciated.
Jaba

Mine did the same a few years ago, yamaha 200hp HPDI, if you look closely at the bar the motor tilts on you may see a small plastic ring with a screw fitting, on that ring it has a tab, on the motor side is a small potentiometer with a small arm which when the outboard is tilted down will just touch this tab, as the outboard is tilted up it moves the small arm and hence a reading is displayed on the guage, these plastic ring and tab can break or if your not careful and over tilt the outboard up it can just slip off, replacements may be same plastic or metal, easy job to fix but a tad fiddly, if the plastic ring and tab are in place and the small arm is touching and working ok then it might be the potentiometer which needs replacing, you can also test the potentiometer with a multi meter. But first check the ring hasnt broken, it may have fallen off completely. I will look for a picture for you.

maybe just as simple as the screw in picture one too loose and allowing it to twist away from the actuator ,mine usually is ! , there is also an electronic reset method in the manuel (command link multifunctional meter (round ) 6y8-2819v-00 page 12 )
that potentiometer is very expensive if you dont need it !

Ok, Update: great news (mainly)..... the potentiaometer is working, because when the lever is manually moved, the bars go up or down on the instrument. Click image for larger version

I wish I could find one this side of the pond rather than risking all that for postage

order one from any Yamaha dealer in uk.

The part was revised from plastic to metal for F30/F40 as shown in link due to them snapping after a year or two but cannot remember if the F80/100 one was also revised.

The smaller diameter ones as used on F30/40 were white, the larger ones were originally black.

when fitting be sure to locate the small protrusion into the hole in the steering tube to obtain correct alignment.
