Yamaha Tacho

Looking for some advice. The LCD is going on my tach - see photo. Are second hand ones likely to be available or am I looking at buying a new one?
If anyone knows the serial number that would be great as a search on eBay throws up lots that look similar but not quite the same!

That Yamaha marine multi-function tacho has probably been superseded a number of times. More details here: 2014 Yamaha MRP Catalog

You might get the same older gauge as you have on Ebay. Check the reverse, there will be a part number somewhere I'd have thought.

What's the year of the engine?

Mike kindly sold me his spare tacho and it is almost identical to mine and the LCD screen is perfect - thanks.

Two questions;

Where should the yellow wheel be set? I'm sure I'm being thick but it isn't clear to me which part of the wheel should line up with the number even!

All the wiring is indentical and fits the connectors except there is an extra black wire (comes out the gauge with a blue wire seperately ot the other wires. I'm guessing this is an earth for the instrument light?

Any advice gratefully received as ever.

50 Geto should be six pole.

Black/Blue wire is the light. Black is negative of course.

Thanks very helpful - tried earthing the black wire and as you say the dial lights up.

In terms of the pole setting which part of the yellow disc lines up with the '6'? I'm sure it is obvious but not to me!

Tacho wired up and fitted and all seems to be working - thanks for all your advice -much appreciated.

Final question (honest!) - the amber warning on the oil level has always been on - you can see it in the first picture. I've never worried too much as I keep the tank filled up but if it is easily fixed it seems sensible to sort. I'm assuming I need to remove the oil level sensor from the tank.

Any advice on how easy this is and what is likely to be causing the problem?

If your old one didn't do this it may be a fault with the tacho. You can take the sender out but you will need a manual to know the resistance. Ask the previous owner if it did this on their engine.

Thanks - no the old one did it as well so I'm assuming it is a problem with the sensor in the tank. Happy to remove it and have a look if it is relatively easy.

morning

having just had similar oil issues on my yam I spent many hrs sorting various and buying new parts not required

for it to turn into a real simple fix, bad ground, see below,


According to the manual the yellow light is triggered by the oil sensor in the remote tank. The red light is triggered by the oil sensor in the engine tank

The sensor switch in the remote tank is normally closed when the float is up (oil in the tank) and provides a ground to the CDI/ECU/Oil module and the ground to the tachometer for the warning light. If and when the float drops the switch opens and removes a ground.

The switch is apparently working and telling the CDI that there is sufficient oil in the remote tank for auto transfer to occur. But, maybe the ground from the switch is not getting to the tachometer, in which case the yellow light will illuminate.

Check the connections in the trim/oil harness at the tachometer. Check the connections to the trim/oil harness in the engine pan.

simple test run a wire as below straight to the tacho,, betya it turns it off--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the green wire with the black tracer is the wire that applies the ground to the gauge to turn off the yellow light.

Thanks for all the advice - now sorted. I loosened off the oil tank so I could trace where the wires went and discovered a black wire not attached to anything! I've now attached this to an earth and the indicator on the gauge now shows green.

Managed to not break anything else while doing this which is a result!
