Yamaha control

Hi all, quick question, should the key on the control box kill all power?
At present with the key removed you can still trim and tilt from either the control box and with the switch on the outboard... Seems dangerous to me, is this the way they are normally?

Cheers

Next in my list, corroded trim switch stuck in the down position and lucky I had a wrench near by to disconnect the battery, wasn't expecting that to happen with the key removed...

Opened the control box and found the start in gear micro switch missing

Probably best to buy a new control box

I think it's pretty standard for trim switches to work with key off I had a friend years ago who had a waterski slide over & press the down button on the control which lead to the skeg being ground much shorter than it started
On the plus side yam control boxes are surprisingly cheap

Regarding control boxes, I have a central console and at present a Yamaha 703 box, but it's mounted on the right side so the handle has to be swapped over, this puts the trim up/ down "thumb" switch on the wrong side, I looked around at other boats and they all seem to do this, but is there a better solution out there?

I could obviously swap the throttle to the left side but it's not something I've seen on other boats? Any reason why control cables always seem to be routed on the right?

Cheers

its normal for the PTT to work on the Yam boxes. swapping the lever is very easy.. Mines on the left. take off round plastic cover. take off the small plastic cable shroud from the outside. undue the 13 bolt from centre of control arm.
undo the white plastic detent locater from outside of box with a good Philips screwdriver and put everything back the opposite way.

True, If the box was in better shape I probably would, individual parts are pricey, needs a replacement trim switch as well, I think I'll try and pick up a better box somewhere instead ...

New Prices I got so far range from £208 - £314 pounds from dealers :-(

Looking at a used one shortly for £109 pound

Half thinking of using this broken box as a reason to do something different and fit the next box on the left side of the console so that the trim button can be thumb operated like it's supposed to ...

That's strange I'd drop forum member 'Davie' a pm he's a yam dealer & very knowledgeable it was him told me they were cheap but sometimes the same part comes under different part numbers at different prices
I got a used box off him & he might have another & will do mail order if required
Worth a try anyway

Am I being thick ? - but what he will then have is a "left hand" control lever - which will be no use on his "right hand" console. If he's lucky he can simply move the cables etc and drill new holes and remount it. Alternatively he could mount it on some standoffs / a bracket (e.g. as RNLI do I think) which would let him attach the left hand configuration on the right side of the console.

You are correct, standoff bracket is a good idea as then the trim switch would be thumb useable

They must have heard/ understood you as in the new brochure they have added "New rotatable grip allows operation of the power trim and tilt switch with the thumb of either hand"

:-)

The Yamaha 703 is completely reversible. You just unbolt the handle and flip it to the other side along with the white half moon plastic decent and do the bolt up.

Yamaha have just released a new cosmetically redesigned 703 control box for the first time in over 30 years. I prefer the older style!
