The one big Marine Electronics outlet in North Wales is willing to rig up the particular plotter I'm interested in so I can have a 'fiddle' provided I can give them a few days' notice but if, for whatever reason, I'm not happy with it or wish to have a look at something else, it will be a faff for them to rig up alternatives.

It seems the boat shows are the only place where you can get hands-on with any kit these days?

I might have to cancel my visit from Santa this year and trek down to the (previously dire) boat show at London's Excel in the New Year unless anyone can tell me where I can get up close and personal with some leisure-oriented marine electronics within 50 miles of Liverpool?

Not quite within the 50 mile limit, but Kildale marine in Hull are very helpful & have displays of various kit up & running, they are also keen on price. Ask for Chris & tell him Dave H sent you.

.....sh1t happens.......

hmmmmmmmmmmmm ................. yeh, apologies, I was forgetting that's it's not so easy to get to play with the kit these days I was very fortunate that the old boat, caravan, camping & outdoor leisure show, or whatever it was called! was still going at the NEC when I was looking, was a few years back now

Thats why I went to the Southampton Boat Show Peeps! I have the same budget as you HP and I would recommend the Raymarine Ed7 (hybrid - touch screen & conventional buttons) or the garmin echo70s. Both units approx 800, 7" screens and compatible with the P79 in the hull transducer as recommended by Mr Smooth!

Ah yes, I remember you sacrificed a grand day's boating to visit the show Gareth - one of the warmest days of the year!

Definitely NOT Raymarine for me. Too many 'iffy' experiences with their kit, albeit 8-10 years ago.

Very rarely find myself over in Hull (although when I'm there I seem to spend serious money, having bought two boats from Hull) but thanks for the heads-up Pikey D.

I think I'm Boat show-bound in January to be honest...
