what torch on rib?

currently I have a maglite 4D, no LED. Am looking to replace it with LED technology. Use of that new torch would be at night at open sea, from finding buoys to SAR ops.

I have seen many LED torches, from LED lenser to wiseLED (that's one!) and many more
What do you use and recommend?

From what i've heard the LED maglites are worse than the standard bulb versions. I think it was something to do with light from the LEDS scattering more particularly in fog.

You could convert the Maglite to LED...various people sell conversion kits - usually just an LED bulb and adaptor. I've converted a 6 cell Maglite this way...batteries last forever, it's a good bright light but I seriously doubt it's suitability for open sea SAR. Drop by a dive shop and get a larger dive light. LED, large enough to be easily held in gloved or mittened hands, and brighter than most non-waterproof lights. Most have a fairly concentrated spot with a less intense surrounding ring, good for reaching a ways out (but less good for searching a wideish area). Completely waterproof, so you shouldn't have any kind of corrosion issues. If you add some of the non-rechargeable lithium cells, they'll have a great shelf life, and a decent burn time. Just make sure you get one rated for out-of-water use (some require immersion for cooling.)

I like the UK (Underwater Kinetics) lights, but the Princeton Tec ones seem to be gaining popularity as well. There's a ton of other makes as well.

My LEDlenser V2 still amazes me every time I use it. I also picked up the PoliceTech version as well which has adjustable beam/focus. Very bright, but can be too bright if there's moisture in the air which causes reflection.

Hand torch is ok for Back up,in which case look at ''Wolf eye's'' re-chargeable 6'' and 400 lumins!! Best there is.
But do yourself a favour and get a 12v Aqua sinal hand held (and or fixed mounted) you won't regeret it!

check out dealextreme.com and any p7 based torch, i use them for night riding on my mountain bike. there are newer version now so browse around but for about £30 you should get a torch plus chargers and batteries.

I use a 900 lumen one from deal extreme for diving, they do much larger ones, worth a look through their waterproof ones.

I'm not sure if you're aware but there's a big torch culture in the UK and USA. The entry level for those in the know is the LED Lenser X21 (first video) but they get much brighter (second video). I reckon two of those puppies strapped to your A-frame would help you see in the dark.

Go for !2v aqua signal hand held you won't go wrong very powerful

I haven't tried it myself, but it does looks like a really nice torch. I like the way that it's waterproof and rechargeable. I've used a LED Lensor X21 before. It's a big, heavy torch but it does put out a lot of light.
