Did YOU think he was a bit Arsey too? I thought he was a bit arsey...

I'm far to polite to mention it though

Smiffysteve, I do not know what is offered in Europe, but you could get a new fixed mount radio now and upgrade your GPS at a later time. You can also get radios with GPS built into them, both handheld and fixed mount. Here are some of the ones offered in the USA. Of course any radio is better than no radio.

STANDARD HORIZON GX1700 Compact VHF Radio with GPS at West Marine

STANDARD HORIZON HX851 Floating Handheld VHF with Built-In GPS at West Marine

UNIDEN MHS135 VHF/GPS Handheld Combo at West Marine

Important: DO NOT BUY A USA RADIO FOR USE IN EUROPE.

it has different VHF channel frequency's.

ONLY buy radio with CE mark.

Awesome advice!

I figured there would be something different in Europe than the USS, but the links I offered still show the brand and model, or at least type that are probably available on Euro frequency's.

My Icom M71 handheld can be set for either - I'm sure this is common. It should be in the specs.

my brand new Hand held Standard horizon hx 280e came just this morning ,
not that i have time to have a good look yet the general manual does state that it can be switched to either USA/canadian Or International bands ,but a foot note in the troubleshooting chart also says it may be set at euro only and the switch over may be a factory disabled function ,,and by the way it does have a CE logo on it .

Yes. But in return you'd have to drive on the right...
