Silva VHF

Just beware their fixed sets have a terrible reputation!

www.jgtech.co.uk price is £89 but this includes free next day delivery - which will cost you £15 with towsure - that makes jg tech cheaper by £5 unless you dont mind waiting 3 weeks for it, in which case its still only £5 cheaper at towsure...

£79.95??? That's about 30 squids cheaper than I paid. Good deal. Silva S12's OK, might be a bit light on battery life but it's lasted 2 good seasons so far. By the way, check on the back of the unit. It says (and I quote)

"Not to be used for safety or distress purposes"

Guess it's a liability issue, like if you actually used it for that purpose and something went wrong...Does it say that on rear of the fixed sets???

crazy times we live in...

Maybe it's because a fixed set (and aerial) usually has a much greater range and offers the ability to transmit with 25 watts. Most (or all?) handhelds offer 1 or 5 watts only IIRC. Your 'Mayday' message is much more likely to be received if you use a fixed set, I'd have thought, especially if you are off shore some distance.
