VHF box

All

I've been looking at the options of where to put the VHF on the boat, I ran last summer on just the hand held.

The only option up front would be on the small flat area under the steering wheel, but this is where I plan to put the fish finder / echo sounder. I did think about under the controls but for protection I'd still be looking at a box here.

So my plan is to put it on the back of the seat in a box. I've seen them in the past but I can't locate one at present. There seems to be various options for cd players and the like - Gimbal Mount Radio Housing West Marine Pro Series | eBay

Will an ICOM 411 fit in one of these or does anyone know of a VHF specific one?

Ta

We have a complete waterproof housing for our Simrad RD86 made by these guys at Neptune Communications on our dive RIB:

Radio Enclosures

Ours if flush mount but I know they also do bracket mount version. I believe they custom make them depending on the radio model and all buttons/dials can be used through the housing. Can't comment on the price I'm afraid as it was many years ago but the radio is still fully functional after 12 years so wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Make sure you are sitting down when you get the price from Neptune.

Do you really want to have all your controls on a box behind you? Feels cumbersome.

One option is to have a RAM Mic which has all the controls on the mic. (SH: Cost £100, c.£150 for Icom) Only certain radios can support that. 411 doesn't I don't think.

While not great I've seen VHF's surface mounted on the side of the console on the opposite side from the throttle, so you can see the screen and controls etc. The 411 is one of the modern 'fat' radios which may make it less ideal for this. Something like the Standard Horizon GX1100 might be a better fit.

Another option is that some sets can have just the front panel mounted on the console and the box of tricks somewhere else. No use if there is no space on the console but useful if there is space but none inside the console its an option.

Question might be how wedded to the 411 are you?

That sounds ominous - and after looking at the web site not surprising.

It does but it seems an easy option for a boat that isn't used every week and that doesn't have a lot of space.

Not overly but with the amount the boat is used and the inshore areas I frequent seems daft to buy a new one.
