Sorry chap, you pm'd me on this one and I didn't get around to replying.

Prise the case apart with care (it will come apart). Source your NiCd batteries, you can buy connecting tabs on Ebay. Solder the tabs on as neatly as poss, obviously in the correct order. Replace the batteries in the case and seal with a wipe of sikaflex. Cost-9, Result- hardly needs charging now.

Does that model of radio have channel 37 ?

I have attacked mine by attempting to ram a sharp screwdriver down the gap between the main casing and the bottom part with the contacts. So far it is reluctant to come apart. Did you just use screwdrivers and more force, or did you have a more cunning method?

I haven't had much time to play with mine. I bought it off ebay with a duff battery. Flicking up and down the channels there seems to be a large gap in the middle that you can't get to including 37. A different channel set may be available if it is set to a different region. Mine is set to international at the moment as far as I can see. A pdf of the manual is available from Standard Horizon.
