I did this about 3 years ago and to my surprise everything worked fine afterwards. In my case, there was no soldering iron available, just a large quantity of crimp bits and a crimping tool. All the wires were joined together fine, and I ensured the sheilding surrounded the inner core properly on the coax. It took about an hour, but was worth the saving.
