Do the Mercury Smartcraft dials read out total engine hours?

Yes, they will be on the tachometer display on the same screen as Battery Voltage.

Is the smartcraft reading the hours from the engine unit or does it have it's own teller.

The reason why i ask is with the Evinrude E-Tec I ad a strange thing last year. While the engine was running suddenly all the counters from the little display in the RMP gauge were reset, but the hour counter in the engine wasn't.

When a the end of 2005 they replaced the engine block of the engine, they had to reprogram the internal computer thing. As it's a new engine block they did a reset of the hours counter from the engine but that didn't reset the one on the gauges.
