I splashed out and bought a new ( now old) M501 and DCS100 controller in August 2000 just after they were launched. ........ although I was waiting from April lile an expectant father !!!!!!
The only problem I had was due to me using a 1500psi pressure washer on the boat and console and in March 2002 the set started to self scan - didn't realise it was a water problem until Icom returned it under foc warranty repair. I only use a hose pipe on the instrument area now !!!
They have also just done the latest software upgrade on the DSC unit which wasn't available/ spec in 2000 - again FOC.
Expensive up front but saves a lot in postage and time removing the set from the console.

Here do not worry the icom that is/was on your old boat is still working well, and carry's on doing so -- so no problem with that...........

Jon --- if i had the spare area of a football pitch,on my consoles, and the money to add 4 of the icom sets (with DSC) to the boats i would -- but dont so cannot...

come up with something the size of the silva -- then would have 4.

By the way sunny again today, and no sign of anything legible on the Silva set -- maybe if you were to package together a handheld with it for sunny days/ or a sun umbrella it would work well.

Will lob it over the side on Friday.....

Pete

The S10 replacement for the knackered S15 has now packed up with the identical fault. Will be going back tomorrow and will be getting replaced with an Icom as I will be demanding my cash back.
A VHF that can't be relied on is worse than useless.

I bought a Silva S15 (June 03) and had the same problem that a lot of people had with the screen packing up so I sent it back two weeks ago under warranty.

A brand new one has just arrived in the post Now I know that some people have had problems with Silva but I call this real service.

Out of interest I rang and spoke to Silva to find out if the warranty for this radio ran for two years (as before) or only for the remaining 7 months of the previous warranty.

They are sure it is the latter but it strikes me that if there radios are good enough to have a two year warranty in the first place why wouldn’t they be able to offer it on the replacement one and are they right because this a new radio and not a repaired one Des

Well if you were supplied a replacment unit from us you warranty would start again.
So if you fill in the card you get 3 years on the replacement form the time it arrives with you.

We only have to offer one year warranty at this time.
EU law is, I understand, about to insist on 2 year.
We offer 3 year because we have faith in our products.
Most will agree are kit last last and we try to be as helpful as is possible.

Regards
