Side Scan
Been wanting to get side scan for ages but are there any better deals out there these days?
I see that AIS (receive only) seems to be more affordable now especially in VHF fixed sets.
Always fancied the HDS7 but do you think it's better to wait for another year as Wifi seems to be getting more popular too?

What you want Wi Fi on a Boat for?...  I get on the water to get away from all that Shite! 
Reliable Plotter Sounder VHF and concentrate on the Sea...Wildlife..and Cruising Grounds your Traveling...
some good company is a Bonus...and that's good enough for me!

I had hummingbird side scan on the rib great bit of kit gone for down scan now lowrance 7 elite not had chance to give it a coat of looking at, both recordable on to SD card.

Quite a few times, the MARPA works a treat when you're sat out fishing / diving & wondering if that 'kin huge container ship is going to run you down��

I thought the wifi talks to your iPad etc so you plan your route at home on navionics and then zap it across without faffing about with cards?
At least thats how I believe it works. I'll have to ask one of the kids

Now I've stopped trimix diving & not hanging doing deco for literally hours, it seemed overkill, just use the AIS now.��

I have a wifi module linked into my NMEA2000 network - donegaldan made it at work one day from spare bits. In it's current format it does just what you say and a bit more, in that it allows approved users to view/control the HDS units from wherever they are on the boat. Music can be controlled too. I store all the boats manuals as PDFs on the second card, so I suppose an iPad would be a useful relay if fiddling in the console or engine bay. I have a very old iPad reserved for this purpose.
I understand that the more recent HDS models will link directly to the internet to download software and connect to Lowrance's crowd sharing bathymetric scheme. Obviously you need a marina with wifi. I'm a little restricted in that sense in that I don't have a marina... 
Overall, I think it's a gimmick

The CPA function on AIS sets is as much comfort as I'd want. I'm resisting donegaldan's demands to fit radar. Pre chartplotters and AIS it made sense, now I'm not convinced. I am absolutely sure that unless the boat has a trained radar bod in the navigator's seat, it's a total waste of money and space.
A 10,000 maxi-watt sound system on the other hand.....

My HDS gen 3 has built in wifi, never used it. I can see its use on a large boat where you could use an iPad as a repeater at a chart table etc. But not on a RIB.

Yeah for sure, I've never used radar before but I have one fitted so It's staying for this year

I think a lot of them are going that way with Raymarine now sporting 4 apps and some units don't even have screens so you just use your iPad etc.
There are HDS7 Gen 3 bundle deals for around £1,140 with the 2 transducers, but I have no idea if thats a great price or not.

Before and after removing some of the electronics.
Planning on running for this year:
JRC 1000 Radar
Raymarine dragonfly 7
Simrad AI50 AIS send and receive with screen
Icom DSC VHF
Fusion Stereo
New switch panel
Not sure to put the digital compass back in or not...
My plan is to put a new cabin on at the end of this year.

My experience of radar is limited to night passages on a yachts. You'd cack yourself without it in busy shipping areas, cross referenced with AIS and Mk1 eyeball and all should be ok.
I've not used radar on a rib, but I'd imagine that the regular monitoring required would be impractical.
