Should I get a Radar?

Hi
Was just wondering whether a radar on a rib is really necessary as I was thinking of getting one!
Any thoughts would be helpfull

Simple answer, I don't know I have radar on BP, I can honestly say that I've never had to rely on it to get me out of the sh1t. It works to a point, picking up land masses, large vessels, beacons etc. Anything small in all but flat calm waters & you're struggling. If money is a consideration, IMHO AIS is better value, considering anything over 300t now must have it. Just worth mentioning that mine is traditional fry yer heed radar, not the new-fangled broadband/HD/Digital type, so I can't comment on those.

If you haven't got AIS then I would install it in preference to a radar.

I have AIS but its not that much help!
So thats why I was thinking of a Radar , shouldn't be too much effort as my raymarine stuff and boat is all capable and ready so now going to go ahead and get a radar
Thanks for your comment!

if you are seriously thinking of a radar then for a rib where the scanner will be low you should only consider the broadband type like 3G or 4G from Simrad or Lowrance. This subject has already been discussed so do a search

Afaik the Raymarine HD system is their version of the new tech broadband radar.

Is the purpose of RADAR to help you see stuff that nobody else can? Because in that case the Admin team might need to invest in RADAR. I'm not sure what the RADAR signature of a troll would look like but I guess that SPAM should give a good reflection.

Which Raymarine kit do you have fitted, as it has a bearing on which radar is compatible. Did you sort your tender out btw?

We have found Raymarine superb and I had them set up the system on the water for me recently. Their AIS also works very well. If you have any issues with their kit I spoke with them at Seaworks last week and they are happy to resolve issues. Had Garmin before and they were good but Raymarine have knocked them off the top recently. If you need a contact, pls pm me and I can give you a great contact

Yes thanks we did sort the tender out!

Of the top of my head I can't remember what raymarine system we have but it is pretty new and its consists of a e-series screen and a dragonfly sonar (which was new very recently!) and when I bought it with the boat they said a radar could be fitted at another time

sounds good to me. As others have touched on, the secret is in getting the scanner as high as you can. Have you got an "A" frame or arch to mount it on? A photo would help.

I have a little theory about that, and we're working on it.

My a frame is Too low to make radar any use. All i'd get is a good pic of my @rse.

I use two things on the front of my face that give a pretty good 3D image of what's ahead.

In on my phone at the mo so no idea where your stomping ground is, but orange paint aside AIS is likely to be a better option as you already have a plotter to show you where the solid stuff is if you really want to spend cash.
