SH HX300 rubber aerial cover comes off?

I recently bought a standard horizon HX300 handheld. After the first trip I noticed that there was a gap at the rubber antanae and when I went to tighten it discovered the rubber cover was loose rather than the stubby having come unscrewed. In fact it pulls off completely and was wet inside which doesn't see ideal for rf transmission. The sparingly coil has a white material on it which I assume was glue? Before I go back to supplier can anyone else confirm this is not right? My hx270 doesn't do it.

Maybe you should have started a thread on here to ask which radio to but before parting with your hard earned cash.

Should be completely sealed, take it back or if it still works fill it with Sikaflex and push it back on.

Thanks Andy - its only a month old so will take it back, it seems to work OK but i've only tested over about 100m. And I'm not going to risk any future warranty argument with a DIY fix.

The fixed SH seem to get a better report than the icom's, had mine 3 years and no issues but with the handheld icom's it seems to be the other way round especially the M71 models .

All the Standard Horizon handhelds use the same antenna - CAT460.

I noticed recently that the ones in the HX300 boxes were packaged differently to others, so may be from a different factory. (AFAIK they manufacture in Japan and China).

Bottom line though is that if it's just the antenna that's failed, a replacement should sort it out.

I've never had one reported with that problem (for any SH model).

I would have thought that the fact you've experienced a failure and had to travel back to the shop would be a good start for some good old fashioned bartering. Scots do barter don't they ?

I quite like the shop though, in this world of internet discounts a shop thats 15 miles from my house and stocks marine electronics at pretty much internet prices is not the sort of local asset I want to screw over, one day I might need them in a hurry (as I did on this occasion when I realised I wanted a second h/held for a trip the day before I left). You see a canny Scot picks his battles wisely!

However I have been thinking about fitting a fixed vhf to the boat too, so it might do no harm to discuss this when in there!

A wise Scot might well pick his battles, but why go to battle in the first place! Play the sympathy card...."Shame about the Standard Horizons build quality what I really liked was the Icom M71 but was just out of my price range as I was considering purchasing fixed VHF as well"

Indeed Scott you could ask him five different ways and the answer will probably be no. In fairness to him his prices are pretty competitive, I might expect a deal if people sell at "list".
