Security of Equipment

As a new Rib owner, I've spent a tidy sum on Navman kit (DSC radio, GPS, Fishfinder, Fuel flow meter & the like) all installed & working well.

With the exception of the radio which is flush mounted, the kit is all mounted on brackets & I remove it & take it away when the boat is off the water.

But I was wondering what you guys do when you're moored up, whilst say you pop to the pub for a bit of lunch, or go for a quick tour of the chandlery.

Do you unplug it all and hide it away? Or trust to luck? Or a console cover? Or is there a device like I have with my laptop (a Kensington lock it's called) which allows you to chain the kit to something solid whilst unattended. It's not foolproof, some decent boltcutters would get through it, but it's a deterrent.

Any thoughts or info. much appreciated

If your thinking about a cable to thread through the toys, (like the things available for a pc), towsure do an alarmed cable. Ideal if anyone is with-in earshot..

I have just ordered A DURASAFE marine lock for our Raymarine C120 , it simply replaces the mounting knobs with ones with a lock on them ...... so the equipment cant be removed easly...... they are only new , and mailspeed dont even stock them .. I had to order from the US , as The UK importer dosent stock the RAymarine fittings

I installed all my goodys in a removable sled dash that I made myself. It's off in a jiffy.

If I'm with other RIBs I tend to leave it all on, as there's always someone close by. If I'm in Cowes shopping or something !! I can remove everything in seconds and either put in a rucksack or lock in my deck storage.

I’m not sure about these locks, my reasoning is that if someone wanted to steal your electronics they would only need to pull the whole unit off with the fixing bracket and if it anything like the Garmin ones I have they could do that with out any tools I think I would go for Hightowers excellent solution or something along the lines of computer cables with stick on pads Des

Removal is the best soulution , But with our Navman stuff the plugs started to wear and become loose , and corroded etc , form constant use ......The fact of the matter is if some scumbag is going to nick your Boat or Gear , its going to happen , and thats what insurance is for..... All youre trying to acheive is to make difficult and hope that they will slect and softer target , and not you ...

On the principle that out of sight is out of mind, a cheapish option is to get a cover made up that goes over you console and electronics. That way when you make a lunchstop somewhere all you have to do is whip the cover out of a locker and fit it over the console and Bob's your uncle! Its not going to stop a determined thief but it does give them one more thing to do and it hides what you've got.

I recently saw a boat that the owner had removed the Electronics and the three cables were inserted in 3 of the fingers of a Mechanics latex glove. Good Idea I thought!

I have a double quilt cover that goes over the whole console, not very stylish but it keeps unwanted eyes off.
