plotter screen scratches

Has anyone found a way to rectify/or replace if possible,the non reflective coating on the screen of a plotter?

Someone has tried to help and rubbed the screen with dried salt on it scratching it. I've not found any threads here covering the solving aspect, only the "I'm pi**ed off that it's happened" bits.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes I've had mine replaced, and it was very expensive on my Raymarine C120 £350 odd if I rember correctly, its a factory job as the unit is hermetically sealed. Mine was caused by a light & fluffy 'Largs Yacht Haven' foam key fob

hanging from the key switch and rubbing on the screen leaving a semi circle of buff area on the display

Hi Muz,

Who did you deal with for the repair?, £350

my unit is sealed in flush, would be a pain to dig it out..thats in addition to the 350 squids.

Just my usual stealers .. ehh.. I mean dealers FYM over in Grangemouth.. Although I now have the details of Raymarine direct

Luckily my mount was really easy to pull out of the console, and I refitted it easy enough to save getting robbed for that aswell

I mean its a cosmetic thing but damned annoying to have to put up with, and the thing is,.. its the way the sun bounces off the marks on the glass that makes it look much more prominent, in darker light its not so bad, I now use the cover on mine all the time when not in use, as its basically in an open console, almost on a flat surface, and quite susceptible to damage. If salt water gets on it, I use a glass cleaner spray first, then, a soft duster to wipe away the solution.

I didn't know those screens were so delicate. I know it won't reinstate the anti-glare coating, but I have heard good things about this product http://www.renovomarine.com/products/p_wpolish.php.

Might be worth trying to get the scratches out before parting with £350 for a replacement?

Aye, I rubbed some of the anti-reflective off mine as well. Damn annoying. Garmin wants US$350 to reapply said coating. Better than the price you guys are seeing, but still seems ludicrous you can't do anything at home for cheaper. I've found several polishes for scratches, but none to reduce glare.

Sorry, there is no fix for a scratched AR coating. I spent some time in the optical industry. No different than if you scratched your camera lense or sun specs: same stuff. The harder the coating the more exspensive and it is the single most expensive part of producing a LCD screen. Takes hours to apply in a sputtering oven which is a batch process and not automated yet that I am aware of.

Thanks for that,I've got some good optical cleaner designed for camera's and bins,I'll have a go and post the results.

Well funnily enough I called Raymarine Direct,who saids send it in and we'll have a look at it? they are presumably well versed on what the issue and how it's repaired, i'm making that assumption from the number of people with similar issues.

Sending it down will be a pain , No one mentioned £350....so will it be " that will £350 sir " after it's arrived.

I'll try some optical cleaner first...

£350 that'll be soon nearly half a tank of fuel..

Garmin resurfaced a screen roughed up from polishing with a dirty cloth on a 3210C I sent to them and charged $50 about 7 months ago....results were perfect and had it back within 10 days.

I may try one of these peel and stick Vikuiti products from 3M designed for LCDs. Gets good reviews from the nerd crowd, and is a fraction of what Garmin quoted me. Worth a shot perhaps.

I was planning to put screen protectors on my Garmin 3005's when I got them - wish I had now.

I've just ordered two invisible shields from www.zagg.com - hopefully it will stop them getting any worse.

Those are good ideas .. so long as you can get them applied without any bubbles

,... ? and the extra layer doesnt change the refracted light, thereby changing the anti glare effect ? could be worth a shot

The Zagg stuff is really easy to apply without bubbles - it comes with a water based spray you wet the plastic with before applying. IMHO out of all the screen protectors i've tried they are the best.

Not sure about the antiglare effect though or how robust they will be in the marine environment.

Will post results once i've tried them

Just applied one - screen looks like new, all the marks from the salt are hidden, antiglare doesn't appear to have been effected.

Really easy to apply too.

Won't get to try it on the boat for a few weeks though.

There doesn't seem to be any sheets of the stuff for sale on their website, just brand specific kits.

Andy - they sell a kit for the Garmin GPSMAP 3005C's that I have. If they don't have your device listed they apparently will make a kit for you.

You might be able to get them to send you a sheet - not sure how easy it would be to cut though.

Mine turned up this morning £21.95 inc express delivery for 8" screen cover

They have an agent in Manchester "Envious Ltd"

Box has a screen cover, bottle of liquid and an installation squeegee (bit of rubber)

They do kits for laptops - I am sure a sharp scalpel would do the trick.
