I had a budget Cobra handheld but it was pants, don't know if this was just the cheap end of their range though or that is what it is all like?
If I was on a real budget I would go Garmin, can really fault their stuff for what it costs.

I bought mine from Matey Boy at West One Marine down at Falmouth Marina. I bought the full Standard Horizon rig, I trawled the www and could only get it cheaper via the States. The nice thing is that he's good for fitting advice and you can wizz it right back should you have a fault. It's not like me to buy locally, so it had to be a good deal.
