New Toy!!!

Just as well I'm single, it only took 5 mins to convince me this is an essential piece of safety equipment, anyone else might have taken a bit longer!!

I see. That sounds reasonable to me. The uses are countless but a few occur to me as I type:

1. To count the number of remaining passengers/crew - lose too many and the boat could be in danger of being undermanned.
2. Watch the expressions of the passengers/crew. No rictus of fear means you can safely go faster.
3. Keep an eye on excess water in the stern section - no water means you can crack on a bit faster.

I'm sure it has many more uses.....

... it also occurs to me that I have no idea what it is!?

Its an infra red camera or FLIR for short!
Very handy at night if the boat happens to fall overboard and you need to find it.
I dread to ask how much but I suppose that depends on what generation it is?

I'll have to make a note of those in case anyone asks!

Its a thermal image camera, similar (but slightly cheaper) to what we often see on Police, camera, action etc mounted under police helicopters

If someone goes overboard at night then it was a bargain! Until such time, I will be feeling ever so slightly guilty

May I suggest that if you are concerned about losing people over the side at night you make the cheaper option and buy some white parachute flares.

White flares - bah, way too sensible and sooo last year.

Did I just feel a twinge of 'toy envy'.

I had a look at the FLIR website and apparently "The Navigator comes at an extremely affordable price. As from now on, price is no longer an object to use thermal imaging on board of your vessel." I have a feeling that "extremely affordable" could be an entirely relative term in this context.

Should we assume all your boating will now be done in the hours of darkness?

We use IR cameras at work, you need to be a bit careful where they get pointed at, especially if some of the ladies from the office walk past...

Good for fault finding though.

I think the video on the website said just shy of 4000 EURO

Unless it has an alarm sensor to indicate something has crossed the cameras path, the only benefit is to watch "possibly in slow motion" countless times the actual person going overboard.

Better still invest in a few cameras so you can watch from every angle.

Simon, I am having trouble visualizing that. Any chance you post some photos for us to demonstrate this?

Hadn't thought about recording the footage, it's just a live feed to the chartplotter, good idea though.

I've got some kind of recording thingy with 2x 80gb flashcards for my 2 bullet cameras all from dogcamsport. Must be a way to wire the IR camera into that as well but it's definately not my area of expertise!
