If you have the remote mike and are in the drink, where is the radio? If its under water then your aerial wont work. So if you need the VHF to say "Oi is someone coming to pick me up or not?" you might struggle to get heard.

Fair point, but that's not an issue for me. The VHF is for general communication, not a 'come pick me up'. The only requirement for the VHF/Mic/Speaker is that it's totally waterproof and I won't have to go buying a new one after taking a dunking!

Let's keep this thread alive:

Currently use a little mini-vhf from my brother as a backup but need to get my own (as a back-up for my fixed mount SH GX2150). Looking for something relatively substantial, well built, waterproof, and floating.

I'm looking at the:
Standard Horizon HX290 for $106 (no tax, free shipping)
Standard Horizon HX400 for $165 (no tax, free shipping)
Lowrance LHR-80 Floating Handheld VHF with GPS for $190 (no tax, free shipping)

The Lowance seems to be the cheapest of the "all the bells and whistles" group....though I'm tending towards the HX290

Oddly, this is actually one of the reasons that I use the remote mic. If in the water, the plan would be to raise the VHF to max height (1m) and hope that this extra bit increases the range (maybe get over the waves better). Face height transmission in the water is as bad as it gets (except under water - LOL)
