Nav charts for PC...any advise ?

I'm looking to use a Laptop, gps module (USB) for navigation ,there appears to be a load of different chart companies offer software to achieve this.

Has anyone used a particularly good offering? there,( for obvious reasons) seems to be a bias towards the states.., has anyone looked into what's best for the UK.

Any info would be appreciated.

I'm on memory map as well. Granted I have no space for a plotter, so I have used it to print laminate-able rib sized charts & verify the 500 odd "untested" waypoints on my trusty Garmin 12.

But as said, at £40 for the whole of the UK, it was a no brainer!

Unless drastic changes have been made to Raytech planner recently, don't bother. It's an absolute dog!

This is what I used for the Memory Maps this year , on my Rib Takes Hardly any space and is "Water Proof" unlike an iphone , And I Can use Full Uk Ordanance Survey Landranger maps on it aswell , Appears very accurate Used it around the Isle of Skye and scottish west coast , And I'm here to tell the tale, I too have printed and laminated some , just as a backup and to read before I go out .

Road Angel Adventurer 7000 with Sat Nav and Ordnance Survey.

Ideal for a Small Rib or Sib.

Although Discontinued , They go for about £50 on Evilbay.

I have to agree with that. I bought Raytech just because I had a Raymarine plotter but I hated it and the plotter so I replaced it with a Garmin and Homeport pc software. Homeport can be a pita as well but lesser of 2 evils and all that.

It might have changed now but with my raytech there was about 10 different map areas stored in 10 different folders on the card. I had to go into the card and guess which one was the area I needed which usually took several attempts as I could only load one at a time

Although I will add that I've got the navionics app on my ipad which is brill

I use Visit my harbour. You can download charts for the rib and overlay google earth. For £25 a year it's a no brainer. There is also detailed harbour charts and sailing instructions for all uk sea areas.

I use belfield software chart plotter on a netbook. Www.chartsandtides.co.uk/chartplotter . It costs around 70 uk pounds to buy and you can download a trial version. I think the trial runs 5 times so you can give it a good test before you part with any money (especially if you leave it open and hibernate the pc. I managed to test it for abound 2 weeks that way before it expired). I think it's well worth the money.

Chris, just looking at changing from 2011 tides only with belfield, is the extra worth it and does the chart version cover all tides again ?

I use the chart software at home for planning trips (because my admiralty paper charts live on my sailing yacht all the time). Just looked and it seems to have tide tables included up to December 2013. After that date I think you have to repurchase at a reduced price to get updated charts and newer tide tables.

I use this too - actually to have access to the tidal diamond info as much as anything else. Good functionality via 'Gadwin print screen' software provided to print hard copy area charts as back up.
Even better - the £25 is now for lifetime ; no annual renewal fee ! wow
