MP3/iPOD

Yet another Q for u guys n girls!

I've fitted some waterproof speakers to my SR4 and are now wondering what to wire em up to!

My previous RIB had an old car tape/radio system that got the beating of it's life and died, suprisingly!

Room is limited in an SR4, so I'd like to go down the road of having either an MP3 player (cheaper) or iPOD (with radio) which I can run off the battery and plug into a socket which i'll wire the speakers up to. (are you still with me???)

Anybody done this yet???
I could do with some tips please!

If this idea doesnt work then is there a waterproof box with clear hinged lid which i can stick a cheap(ish) car stereo system in?

Awaiting in anticipation! - Brian

If you go down the mp3 ipod route, what will you do for an amp? I'm sure one of the electrical people on this forum could draw a circuit diagram of a home made amp to make the speakers active.

Otherwise, you will need the head unit for the amp side of things but you can get ones with an input so you could use an mp3 player....you wouldn't have any problems with skipping then.

Cheers

A custom made amp in a waterproof box is what you need . Will have a rumage in my workshop see whats around, but in simple terms the MP3 is the way to go . CD players and ribs were not made for each other. Even the Clarion marine one doesn't work.

Yep.

The MP3 player will have a line level output or headphone jack if nothing else,
connect this to the input of a 12 volt car amp. I think JBL do a decent one for about sixty quid.

Mount the amp in a bigish IP66 box or an empty flare box . it has to be bigger than the amp to allow for heat disapation and away you go. The Ipod.MP3 solution is far preferable to a CD or Cassette as it is Solid state and has no electromechaikal parts to go wrong through impact or water ingress

mp3

I've build one in last summer. An Iriver mp3 player wich runs 20 hours on one penlight-battery. Placed one amplifier inside the console and bought a set of good speakers.
Great sound, never flips over and the thing has got a radio too.
Once I have left the thing inside the boat and it was submerged in a bit of water. Took it apart, placed it in a warm placed and the thing worked the next day ! ( I would'nt try this too much times).

It's not waterproof so i mounted it somewhere behind the steering wheel to keep it as dry as possible.

The player has got 128 mb storage for some 100 numbers. You can always buy bigger.
I'm not sure if the harddisc types will flip over while playing.

In Silva's range of bits, they do a water proof MP3 player.
Not sure of its song capacity.
Saw it at LIBS this year.
I think it is part of the Oregon Scientific range they sell.

Might be worth a look

I don't think an iPOD will last very long on a RIB - every time you hit a wave a nice chunk will be gouged out the surface of the hard disk platter by the heads. Much better to go for the solid state MP3 option.

Be sure that you buy a wma-file compatible player. Not only for mp3.

Well, the speakers are there and I have got an Oregon Scientific waterproof MP3 player, now all I need is a small amp (seariders suck for console space) and some phono sockets and leads.
I will let you know the results when I get around to hooking it all together.

Does the itunes software supplied with an ipod allow you to easily convert wma's into mp3s.....If not I know there is other software out there that will - is this likely to be a terribly long process (converting 17gb of wmas that is)
