Shouldn't. I believe the DSC signals are sent over channel 70; the transmission itself isn't really different than voice communication, except that the generated broadcast is a digital signal rather than an analog audio signal. If voice transmissions work, DSC will as well (assuming the DSC portion of the radio is working.)

From the reported tests on the Nautilus Lifeline handheld, they were able to send and receive voice calls for up to three miles, but the DSC traveled just over 12 miles, and those tests were performed at water level for the handheld.

We are lucky in that our coasts here in the USA are set up with Rescue 21 which is monitored by the Coast Guard. A large majority of even the remote coastal areas are monitored.

This is from iCom's Handheld DSC website

You can also request the position coordinates of any radio listed in the address book. The other radio will reply with its latitude and longitude, and its distance and bearing will appear on your screen. The radio can serve as a GPS and set a course to the other DSC-equipped unit. (DSC doesn’t provide continuous tracking, so if the other radio is moving, you’ll need to make multiple position requests to get the current coordinates.)

About DSC Handheld

iCom support say the M91D isn't programmed to send requests despite what it says above

That seems to be misleading then

I think Scot said a dealer can enable position requesting on the M91D with some programming cable magicry.
Can't think why it would not be a standard capability though.

Interesting.... iCom have replied to me saying they have removed that text from their website and are consulting with iCom Europe technical department to see if this feature can be enabled. They'll get back to me in a couple of days.

Maybe you should get a job with them

I have just been on the Ofcom website and got my dsc portable license with mmsi no etc.

I was very shocked how easy it was, I thought I would have to do another radio operators license as I did mine in about 1990. But it seems not, well it let me have the licence anyway!

Now I have to save up and look for a decent handheld with the gps built in, most now do but not all. So Im told!

iCom confirmed today (as Scott already knew) that the position request option is available, but I have to return the radio to them for a software upgrade.

They are amending the relevant part of their handheld DSC website that anyone intending to purchase this radio and wishes this feature will have to request it through their dealer at the time of purchase.

It maybe worthwhile pointing out to anyone you know who is planning to buy one.

You don't need a course to get the licence.

BUT you *should* have upgraded your operator's certificate to include GMDSS.

I have been looking into exactly that just now.
But not got a dsc radio yet, so not been using it illegally.

It sounds as though even when you buy a new radio it will need 'upgrading' by a dealer to enable this feature.

I'm trying to think of a reason why sending a position request is not available to all out of the box?

This is what they said in the email I got

Quote:
however in order to keep menu options of DSC simple to use for safety reasons this feature is not enabled as standard
It would seem to be only adding 1 menu item so it does seem odd
