Icom to garmin gps...

Hi all, just got a rib with all electrics severed for one reason or another, all is now back working.....BUT! The Icom radio only has 4 leads out the back, positive, ground, a black one and another black one with (which looks like) a 3.5mm headphone socket. Now,is there a way of linking this to me Garmin 451 or should I bite my lip, buy new as the mmsi number also needs resetting?

Cheers all,
Al.

RIBase
The 3.5mm socket is for a speaker extension.

The black one without anything on will prob be a shielded cable-thats the one you need to hook it up to the GPS.

So, now looking at the garmin 'bundle', what's all this nnmea 0183 lark? I'm assuming it should be an 'input' rather than output... Where's Bill Gates when you need him!?,? :o)

NMEA 0183 is a standard that means different equipment all talks the same language. You will want the garmin output (talker?) going to the icom input (listener).

0183 is getting on a bit but pretty much most things will be able to revert to it.

Bill did nowt to improve connectiveness between machines btw.

Which Icom model is it? More recent ones have 2 RCA sockets for 0183, one in, one out. The in takes GPS position so you can broadcast it for a mayday or position request etc. the out will plot the same from other vessels onto your gps

It's 411... On the rear I have, live, negative, external speaker and a single black. I'm thinking of sacking this one off and getting new....however, with the dosh that its cost me to get started in all this it's not something else I fancy lobbing out for, especially when there isn't an mmsi number programmed into it either.... Urgh..... Haha

Looks like the 411 only has GPS input. It's the black wire which should have an inner (+)core and a shield (-)
