Icom R.i.b Raid

Hi guys - a little advice if you could. Over the weekend, at the RIB Raid I found myself speechless - YES, it's true.....

My ICOM M401EURO started acting up, I could hear everyone load and clear but no bugger could hear me - you luckly lot - Anyway, I fiddled with the mike connection into the side of the set and for a short while I caught the airwaves but thereafter all I could do was receive.

Does anyone know the reason, mike, set, ariel ?

The unit was installed in 2002 by MGA Watersport and has worked faultlessly since.

had the same problem on my M59 EURO years ago.

it was a connection in the mic it's self.

Richard B had the very same problem on his M59 aswell but i don't know if he got it fixed or if it was the same fault.

from memory the fistmic its self has not changed for the 401 so i'l buzz through the mic wires if you want to do this yourself.

PS: these might have a 3yr warrenty, Jon 'll tell us later i am sure

Sorry been out of the loop for a few weeks, been away then off sick

Send the unit back to us
We can have a look and sort it.
Does sound like an issue with the mic but wont be able to tell until we see it in the flesh

........the unit arrived at ICOM yesterday morning and just 5 minutes ago a very nice chap called Jeff called to advise me he had found the fault, something to to with a degraded solder joint on a resistor. He had effected a repair and the unit would be despatched and with me by tomorrow morning in time for a weekend of safe boating.

FANTASTIC WELL DONE ICOM

However................there had to be one.........

£64.62p

I was advised I was out of warranty - fair enough - however, a degraded solder ! I know little about such matters but do now feel a little uncomfortable that the whole unit may be degrading and consequently feel the need to replace it.

For sure, I'll now be seeking a manufacturer offering something better that 12 months. Would I but another ICOM ? £64.62 probubaly goes against them at this moment in time.

About 6 years ago I ordered a pair of walking boots from America, very spercific ones that I had always fancied ever since watching American War movies.

Anyway, some years and many miles later some of the stitching started to come away, mre than likely due to their exposure to salt water. So, I sent them back simply asking for a repair.

About 3 weeks later a brand new pair arrived with the following leaflet attached. I ask myself, would I buy another pair from this comapny, would I recommend all interested to listen to buy from this company, do I think I got value for money, did I feel like a valued customer, would I ever buy another boot from elsewhere ?

Sorry to say due to ill health was un able to check on and track this radio.

All Icom radio's come with 3 year warranty as long as the customer fills in the warranty card supplied, if not its 12 months only.

I will speak to geoff in the morning and get the full story.

Whilst you may think we are the worst company on the planet at the mo I have to say we would not charge if there was any indication that this was a genuine fault with the unit due to us or construction but I will find out in the morning.

Also not many companies post advice and help on forums so must count for something

....with the wording of my post as in no way did I wish to offend either your very good self or ICOM, both of whom I have heard and or read, nothing but praise.

As the second owner of my RIB and consequently, the vhf, I fully accept any warranty remarks / stipulations, however, I was slightly (only slightly) surprised to be charged for a fault not of my doing.

Geoff informed me that the unit was clean, dry and in general good order, save for a degraded solder. Therefore and in laymans terms, it wasn't me, it was him

As my PM, email and attached letter stipulated, I would of course be more than happy to pay for any damage and repair. I stand by those remarks. In fact, it you had advised the repair was free but the swift turn around and next day courrier cost amounted to £62.00 - I'd have paid without so much as utternace as I am desparate to get it back for this weekend.

So, I reiterate. Well done ICOM, Jon and Geoff for turning the job around within 12 hours, and thank you.

Ok I have tried to look into this one today.
Just my luck have a few day's off come in and Geoff has the day off!!

From what I can can see on the service info the only charge is for labour.
You have been charged for 1 hours labour.

Once Geoff is back, on Monday, I will chat through it with him.

Takes a lot to offend me, just any one that knows me
