Icom M421 ?

Spotted a good deal on a Icom M421 (Sub 140 quid inc Vat)... but just looking to see if any of you guys can tell me if my Garmin 126 will be able to supply the GPS required to get the DSC part to work?

Or am I going to have to get a new Chart Plotter too ????

Also which antenna should one get ?

I had a Garmin 126 with a Navman 7100 and that supplied all the necessary info to make the DSC bit work on the Radio. I take it its the Co ords you require on the radio display ?

I don't see any problem. They are both pretty modern bits of kit you've got. The Garmin 126 supplies all sorts of NMEA out.

The tricky bit is the wiring because each company seems to use different colour wires. Hopefully someone on here has the same setup and can point you in the right direction.

As for aerials try the RIB raider. Seems popular but keep an eye on it, because you cant get replacement antennas if you lose the whippy bit. You have to buy the whole lot.

Not sure, but I'll sell you a Standard Horizon GX-1500E (Which I reckon more than the icom, as it has rotary channel selector, DSC Polling out, Intercom/Remote Mic Availability, and a better menu system) for

£159.99 inc delivery
(SRP £179.99 ex delivery)

Biggles, I will sell you anything! Especially a brand new Parker Rib with Standard Horizon Electronics, a Powerboat Level 2 Course and Radio Course. What a turnkey package. Boat Care UK will even maintain it all for you!

You will have no problem with the Garmin and any DSC radio.

Like our plotters the Garmin range have DSC option.
This will auto plot in comming DSC distress calls and responses to DSC Position requests.

Sadly not all radio's allow this feature.
All of ours do as do some of the Icom range, not the M421 though.

It is worth mentioning that the GX-1500 comes with the flush mount kit and a dust cover as standard.
There is no cover for the M421 and the flush kit will cost you about £21.

Both ours and Icom have a three year warranty as standard.
With our you don't have to remember to fill in the card!!!

All the best

Funnily enough I was reading that thread earlier today! That has to be a big plus point for the Standard in my book (not that I'm biased in any way )

Are you sure on the price and are you sure its black?
Could be an ex vat price.
I had seen they were knocking the white ones out cheap.

All the best

That's good then cos the white ones do go orange after a while

I think most would suggest the Rib Raider from Vtronix, seems to do the job well for a rib.

Al the best

So which DSC radios in the sub £200 price bracket do send NMEA data to a chart plotter? Standard Horizon GX-1500E is one of them, but not the Icom MC-M421. What about the Navman 7200? I want my otter to be able to display the position of a DSC distress call, so I need to get the right radio. I take it I am looking for anything with NMEA in and out?

Go for the Standard Horizon. Yes I'm biased as I sell them (and I have one fitted to the RIB), but to be honest, if the Icom doesn't have NMEA out (which it doesn't) the Navman really is not a contender. They just aren't up to the wet stuff.
