I have decided on the boat I'm going for and I should have it by the weekend. I have a handheld vhf and a garmin vhf 100 which was fitted to my cruiser, I have removed this and am going to fit it to the rib. Do I need to notify of com and if so what is the procedure for this?

Yes you'll have to register the fixed and handheld VHF. It's free to register and easily done on line.

Are you Sure Landlord? when I got my handheld three or four years ago was given Txxxxxx number and understood this means it transerable ie registered to me not the boat?

my understanding is that 'fixed' will need to be re-registered but not handheld

I'm sure when I registered my fixed to the rib there was a section where u can also add handhelds think its just to inform them that u will also transmit on it but it does not need registering like the fixed

Fixed needs registering and covers any number of handheld used on board

If no fixed radio then a portable VHF licence required.

Have you got your personal VHF licence? probably more important.

Ok Firstly HH can be either part of the ships radio licence, or stand alone licence i.e. use on and vessel. Now the Fixed Radio and MMSI should remain with the vessel!!

yep, the mmsi is allocated to the vessel and stays with it. problem is you cant change the number in your radio without sending it off to the manufacturer / dealer.

A fixed radio can be removed from a vessel. If it has an MMSI programmed in it can be returned to the radio dealer and have the MMSI removed / reprogrammed.

An MMSI number and vessel call sign remain with a vessel.
