Thats the ticket. When I bought the unit Lowrance instructions stated that it had 0183 input/outputs on the HDS-7. On checking tonight when it didn't work, and although the website still states 0183, it turns out that units smaller than 8" only use RS-422 and this is only partially compatible.
The update from Digital yacht seems to supply the full answer, and its free!

I got the capacitor through and had it working tonight picking up the ships in the harbour.
Haven't seen any alarms etc as obviously I was sitting in the driveway and all the ships are tied up due to the weather in the bay.
It certainly now picks them all up and displays them now on the HDS-7 so progress there now........
